yea, i think ill do exhaust, and im getting alot of people saying put her on the bottle. as far as the exhaust goes, the previous owner left the manifolds, got rid of the cats, and then it appears that he just took pipe and welded it back into a magnaflow muffler, and then out the back, everything is placed right, but it doesnt look like he bough a y pipe and then a cat back, could this be hurting my performance??

The most performance gain you will get for $1k is with a high stall converter. Get a new converter, shift kit, temp gauge and tranny cooler. Should also get drag radials and subframe connectors. That can easily run over $1k, so you will have to choose parts wisely and self install would help a lot. Nitrous would add more but it's not avaiable 99% of the time. I highly recommend your first mods be something you get a benefit from each and every time you hit the gas.
But be cafefull and treat the tranny nice. Don't let it get hot, don't get on it over 200* tranny temps, don't go WOT in fourth gear and severely limit WOT downshifts, especially into second gear.
I wouldn't get nitrous. For one, it costs more than $1k to do it right. Buying a bare bones $500 kit and running it with no tuning or way to monitor it is NOT the right way to do it, especially with a large shot.
I personally did the exhaust before the converter because I was all about the sound, and I'm still not sure if I made the right decision in getting headers/duals before converter. If you decide to get the exhaust first you can get coated pacesetters with an off road Y-pipe from TSP for $500, and then your choice of cat-back plus the little/random things. Or you could go with duals.

long tubes and duals... thats the way to go. you dont get better sound from the converter, but you do get both power and sound from long tubes and duals. get the converter next if you are an A4

Things to consider before lowering. That's when I'm glad I got the ground effects package on mine, it doesn't look as high but I still get good clearance and don't mess up the suspension.
