Default Just purchased a functional SS hood..??

It was purchased for my z28. Do i need any extra parts or intake to make it fully functional? I have a Lid, but is there anything else or different I need to make it work at its best?

The lid should cover it, there is a rubber strip that goes along the metal at the bottom of the opening between the lid and metal to seal it tho

other than taht, all i can recommend is that you take your time!!! TIME!!! dont just bolt it up there and not adjust it, you need to be very careful on linein it up right or else it'll just look retarted, have another person to help you bolt it while you slide it up and down, makes it way easyier like that. other than that, lucky SOB,... i wish i had a ss hood...

I didn't think they made a functional "ss" style hood.

I found a guy on here selling an already painted ss hood for $500 pick-up. I searched for over a year, next cheapest I found was $800. Needless to say, I got a steal.

Depends on how you define functional.

Functional for ram air, no.

Functional for cold air in the engine bay, yes. However much gain that will give, every little bit counts I guess.

functional means it has a function. Non-functional means it doesnt.

Everything has a function It's functional cause it serves the function of making your car look better? I don't see any possibility that the ss hood could provide any difference in the amount of air going into the lid/engine, or the temperature of that air.

Have you seen an ss hood?? Have you seen what they look like underneath? Obviously not. The air goes into the opening and wraps around and back into the intake. Please dont post on my thread if you have no clue what your talking about. Stick to your formula.

I'm sorry, but I don't recall seeing anything under the ss hoods. I was wondering how the ss hoods worked. Are the stock ss hoods like this as well, as that is the only ones I have seen.

Yes, the stock SS hoods have this function. The air goes in and wraps around in 2 different directions in a heart shape and back around into the front of the lid/intake. The non-functional aftermarket hoods do not have an opening for the air to go in. Even if someone cut out the hole on the aftermarket ones, it is still not functional, the functional part of the hood is underneath in the heart shape structures.

Quick questions because I also just bought an SS hood. It's OEM but going on a Z28. I'm also guilty of just assuming it merely let a little more cool air in, albeit to the mid-rear of the engine bay and didn't realize it channeled it like that. But what is it that some of the places that sell these hoods are selling as a "functional kit" under their SS hoods? As an example the sponser TByrne sells an SS hood, as well as an "SS Functional Kit" for $300. The car is BONE stock so, is there something I need to make the most of the extra air....or am I still better off to just get a lid?

Oh one other thing, I've heard the SS hoods utilize different hood struts....is this the case? Should I not simply swap over all my mounting hardware from a stock Z28 hood?

Definitely get a lid before the hood. Could do a cutout too. Both are pretty cheap.

Actually camarodave, they are RIGHT! Stock SS and WS-6 hoods actually have very little, if any, function. The only way to make it semi-functional is to seal the airbox.

1st... what kind of hood are you going to get? if it is a stock "take off" hood then no it will not. if it is a fiberglass hood then yes you will go faster, because it is LIGHTER!

2nd... do you plan on SEALING the hood? if you do then it will act as a CAI and yes you will make more power and go faster...

if you plan on going with a stock hood, and not sealing it... then you might even go SLOWER

For a ram air, no function. But once you are moving it does provie some cooler air that can be seen by monitoring IAT's. Minimal performance difference, but every little bit helps.

think of how convoluted that "ram air" set up in on your SS.....so you really think you are gaining anything? I will admit though, SS hoods do look nice. If a "ram air" effect is what you are looking for go buy a Fast Toys Ram Air or a Super Sucker Ram Air. Stock SS hoods are not functional.
