87 octane
Does anyone else use 87 octane? I've tried 87, 89 & 93. The only difference I notice is the price . Here is what the manual says:
If your vehicle has the 5.7L V8 engine (VIN Code G),
use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane
of 91 or higher for best performance. You may also
use middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at
87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may
be slightly reduced. If the octane is less than 87, you
may get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If it is
bad enough, it can damage your engine.

It's well-known that these engines will actually get worse gas mileage using 87 octane thus making the price difference negligable. The only thing you risk is poor performance and/or damage to the engine.

I tried 87 in '02 and it knocked and stumbled and felt like crap. I tried it for a couple of mos to let the pcm get adjusted, but it didn't help. Went back to 93. I always run 87 in my '99 TA and it does not bother it at all. The Ram Air must be more sensitive to it. Besides, it is only an extra $2.50 per tank. If you car seems ok with 87, then stay with it.

dude,it says in your sig that your motor has a tune in it? why in world would you put 87 in it? if anything you need a little more octane depending on how much your timing has been bumped up. i personally use nothing but sunoco 94 in mine.but thats what its tuned for

The reason I asked is because I dont notice a difference between 87 & 89. It feels the same. 93 a little difference. I bought the car stock with only 7k miles on it. Almost brand new. Maybe the car only knows 87, 89 octane?

my take...if youre payin for the damn car...what's 2.50 a week? thats half of a fast food meal that could be saved by eating at home. youre trimming pennies where it could really F something up. pay the money or get a car that doesn't require it. just my .02...which would make that extra bill on top of regular 2.48 instead of 2.50. come on guys...dont be super cheap bastards.

WADDISME: You seriously need to resize your signature. It makes reading this page a PITA b/c I have to scroll from side to side. There is a limit to sig size. I forget what it is, something like 350 x 150 maybe?
I can tell you one thing: 1064 is way too wide.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SMOKIN ?????
whether or not YOU notice anything depends on how tuned your ear is to your car...
but understand with NO uncirtainty... you car feels it....

one more thing to remember is that most cars, even bone stock will knock with 93 octane.i know if you run 87 your car will get kr no matter what. And also remember the knock sound you usually hear is not the flame front crashing together but your piston and rod bearings under the immediate shock load.not to good if you ask me.

Ok. Maybe the manual is wrong then.

yeah nothing but premium 93 goes in my tank. well of course when I stop by the local station with 110. then I put a couple of gallons of that in there. the bird likes the extra octane
