Default Best horsepower gains for the $$$

Just wondering what the best bang for my buck would be? I am willing to spend about $500 at this time to mod my 98 Z28 LS1. Thanks.

If the car is STOCK, a good lid and filter setup is top billing. Take the rest and put it towards a cat-back exhaust. No sense having headers until the engine can breate moe air in and not choke it on the way out. Use the search for the exhaust and lid comparisons and info.

If you're feeling squirrley, a basic nitrous kit will give the MOST bang for the buck on a limited budget

Another vote for LT headers... !! BIG thumbs up!! I'd say add a new Y-pipe and soem HF cats too... And obviously, I'd bolt that onto a NICE cat back...

But for $500, lid and some minor bolt ons.. Don't bother w/ the aftermarket MAF, leave the screen, or the SLP bellows either..... You'll notice a good 10 HP from the lid... Looks nice too!

like schantin said, i think his car may be bone stock. I agree with lid and catback. Also, you can port your own tb with a dremel kit.

intake and exhaust or if you arent looking for N/A power nitrous is the best bang for the buck. What other mod will give you 100hp on a stock motor for around 3-400 used.

Nitrous. Period.

If you want to stay N/A, headers, lid, and cutout would be what I'd go for.

headers, lid and a cutout all for 500? i say catback, lid, tbody bypass, and free mods including cutting the bottom out of your airbox and porting the tbody. maybe switch to synthetic oil just to sqeeze a little more out of her.

Lid, catback, port your TB theres a couple great write ups on this and its free usuming you have the tools to do it. Also do the free mods tb bybass, free ram air, and shortened egr since your a 98. I would also change all the fluid's if you just bought this car i would also go synthetic in motor and rear and just use regualr ATF in the tranny synthetic seems to be a no no in our trannies. New plugs and wires would't be a bad idea. If this is a used vehicle i would tackle all the regular maintence stuff first just to make sure everything is up to par. Headers are a good mod, but not really at there best untill you get a tune. Which will cost another $300-$600 unless you know someone that has tuning software that will do it for a minimual cost or free so i would hold off on headers myself.

Cutout = $30 installed at some shop.
Lid = $70 used off of here.
Headers = $400 for the Pacesetters from TSP

Sure you're going to have other "supporting" mods you'll have to buy to make all of this work, but thats to be expected. Just a part of the game.

I honestly think that you have a never-ending road in front of you that will gobble $100 bills by the handful. Horsepower is addictive. Start with a lid and catback, Shop the used section on this site. You'll save thousands in the long run. That's my tip.

yeah but you don't want to start from the top, thats like getting an aftermarket k-member and airbags but no springs.

Guys, if the limit is $500, LTs are off limits. They are at least $300 for plain painted ones. Plus, you gotta have a y-pipe that fits the brand you buy. Thats another $150, at its cheapest. Then, you need a muffler - a bullet will cost $50. You're at $500 already, with no tuning (to get rid of codes), clamps for the exhaust, hangers, etc.

Used lid ($70-$100), cutout ($30 for the part, plus $25 for install), maybe an underdrive pulley ($250), then see what you've got left.

Basically, here's what you need to imagine when thinking about the beginning HP mods: think of the engine as a simply air pump. The more air you can get into AND out of it, the better it will be (this is why turbos and superchargers work so well). If you have the best intake setup, it won't matter if you've got a restrictive exhaust (and vice-versa). You want the air to have no narrow sections to go through. And, you want all of the passages that it flows through to be smooth and straight.

When you begin really getting into HP mods, you can then start worrying about things like lightweight reciprocating parts (valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons/rods, etc.).

I would do gears first if its an m6, and a lid if money was left. 4.10's make the 6 speed so much more fun.
