The difference in the block is improved oil valleys, which some would argue allow the LS6 motor to see higher RPMs because of improved oiling capabilities. There is no proof or stats that support this however. Some would also argue that the LS6 blocks were cast with better materials because of the two different locations that produced them but that is another arguement that could not have a provable outcome as well. I think that they were cast very closely if not exactly the same.
The heads, valvetrain, a little higher compression ration, and the cam made all the difference in these motors. The heds on an LS 6 from the factory are great pieces to work with and can flow as well as most aftermarket heads or better than any aftermarket head with some work (all else beng equal).
Great motors to use as a platform to mod and build upon. Some cars (about 25 % in 2001 and 2002 came with the LS6 block, but that does not mean anything when all other variables are the same. You have to look at the casting numbers to see whats what, but don't buy into the hype that you have an LS6 motor, they are very different in heads/cam/valvetrain. Everything else was the same as a normal LS1 and therefore, the same motor.
I love SS guys trying to tell me that their motor is different than the Z's but thats complete BS, the exact same motor was installed in the Vette, the Z and the SS. Period. All else is benchracing and pride ******* with you for spending more money than the next guy.

Yes, some f-bodies did come with LS6 blocks. I've heard that the LS1 blocks are actually a bit stronger because they don't have better breathing...
Its of no consequence, the only main performance difference the injectors and intake, with the cam and exhaust manifolds slightly different but not very important.

"and what cars came with LS6?"
I think this question has been glossed over. I believe the LS6 only came with Z06 C5s, not sure specifically what years.

The only difference in an SS is the appearance in body oparts, the suspension, exhaust/intake, wheel and tire size, trans and oil cooler on some, and the fact that the average costs was about 5G more. The motor was the exact same thing, go into the GM online parts catalogue and try and find anything that denotes a difference in motor, cam etc.. other than LS6 type hardware. They are the same engines. Anyone who tries to tell you different is smoking poor quality crack.
I may be stepping out on a limb here, but its not uncommon for a Z28 to be quicker than an SS due to lighter weight. I do know this, when my car was stock, I had no problem keeping up with or beating an a stock SS.

I vote for 01-02. They come with a stronger clutch stock, they have upgraded Hydraulics stock, they have the LS6 intake stock, they are EGR-Less (helps clean up the engine bay a little), oh and they are newer... so if you are getting a loan the bank likes newer cars.
Oh and to you haters.... the SS does have something different with the motor.... its powered by liquid schwartz.
The only thing heavier of substance on the SS can be the wheels. but the liquid schwartz easily over comes that.

Yep.

“The CTS-V engine is a Corvette LS6 in nearly every aspect except for the exhaust manifolds, the oil pan and the accessory drive,’’ said Dave Muscaro, assistant chief engineer for the LS1 and LS6 V-8s.

Anyways, both the SS and Z28 are great performance buys. Eiter way you go, get your hands on one of the best muscle cars made IMO.
