"Nothing if you don't know" makes sense to me too.
I just spent $500+ on a Magnaflow catback and polished billett grill for my newly acquired stock Z, but:
I. It was immediately obvious to me the black plastic grill was not the look I wanted, and polished billett would be a huge appearance upgrade, and;
II. The stock exhaust tips look like a 7th grader's metal shop project -- and I want a slightly louder deeper tone --- so a little research here and at "ls1 sounds" convinced me the Magnaflow catback was the way to go...
I basically love my "new" Z, but immediately felt strongly compelled to do the these mods to make my daily driver all she can be...
If you are happy with bone stock, and lots of folks are, there is no reason to mod just because you have money, or just because you found a mod crazy forum...
BTW, thanks for reminding me I need a lid

Spend the $500 on your significant other.
What am I saying?????? Scratch that. Seriously, I can't understand how you are not ready for exhaust. Perhaps Headers would be premature but these cars absolutely love to breath. The stock muffler is not only too quiet but it's also extremly restrictive. You can gain around 10 rwhp with a decent catback and it'll make the car sound (IMO) more like a muscle car should.
Or you could do what I did. Buy a $40 12" (or 18") bullet race muffler. Then pay an exhaust shop approx $100 to remove the stock muffler, fab a pipe where it used to be and weld in the bullet in the I-pipe. Dynomouth ala cart for $140.00 and you get to keep the stock tips (assuming you like them). The car will sound way meaner, breath better and you'll probably lose a tenth/gain a mph (if you care about 1/4 mile numbers that is).
But if your dead set against exhaust then I think 4.10 gears would be a great investment for you. M6 guys seem to love those gears over the stock 3.42's.
Good luck

you ave 500 bucks, great! Don't blow it, save it. I agree with people that say don't spend money if you're not sure, but I have a pretty good idea that the reason you're making thsi thread is exactly for that reason... you want to know what to get next. Nothing wrong with that.
I don't know why you say you're not ready for exhaust, but I would save up a lot for stainless pacesetter LT's and an off-road X-pipe. Great sound, it'll gain you a good few ponies, and even help your gas mileage! If you drive them long enough you can pay for them just with the money you're saving.
But if you do lots of city driving 3.73 or 4.10 gears would be great, you'll lose top end but that doesn't matter too much in the city.

If you don't want exhaust you could do like underdrive pully, ls6 intake, throttle body or like visual mods: clear corners, halos, CAMARO inserts, grill. Hell for around 500 you could almost get a nitrous kit.

LS6 Intake/Ported T.B, with vent tubes should be able to get it done for under $500, and have a little left in case you break the oil sending unit or something happens during install (ie. need new gaskets). This should be worth a nice 10-15rwhp in stock form, and more in conjunction with other future mods and a tune. I'd say after those 2, next thing should be some nitto's tho.
Peace,
Josh

i would say . if you're not certain dont run for the first thing, save your money incase lets say.... your motors break on power windows , locks, seats., or headlights, wait until you have a little more to do anything yet
