Bullshit!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with running anything from 87-93 octane in the car! To be honest, there is not a lot of performance gains either.

I think it's more like you don't know what you are missing. I'd run 93 for 3 weeks in a row and see how much different things are.

I guess hype is one thing, my brother's best friend has a 70s Dodge Van that has a high compression 360 (crazy built up one)... He claims it wont run on anything less than 100 Octane and thats why he uses it, but I think he would have to add a whole crap load to get to 100...

yeah---thats what I am saying..does anyone here know the real deal on these octane boosters.?? a couple of friends say its not worth it..they just add AV Gas instead because gains with one bottle of boost is useless......but it seems other people use it all the time..???

in NJ we have 87, 89, and 93. sunoco USED to have ultra 94 up until like last month wtf? premium used to be 93, 94 ultra wasn't advertised on the sign but it was available at the pump for extra. now, on the sign they have regular 87, plus 89, and ULTRA 93 (94 is gone...) advertised on the sign but no premium is advertised. however, premium 91 (yea, premium is no longer 93, it's 91 now?) is available at the pump for cheaper so i just use 91. sunoco now carries 87, 89, 91, 93. sunoco is all i buy unless they're out of gas and i HAVE to go somewhere else.

this is wacky. 5 years ago, regular was 89, plus was 91 and premium was 93 EVERYWHERE in NJ. we get lower octanes now and the price doesn't go down. why? no one notices the octane!

91 is the highest I can find in the Tampa Bay area. Would probably run higher if I could find it.

I use mostly 94 in my car now. If I run 91 in warmer weather I get pinging in the low rpms (1000-2000) at part throttle (this is mainly due to the fact that I had my timing bumped up 3 degrees in the lower rpms in order to get better throttle response)

The big problem with running 94 is that up here the only choice for 94 does contain 10% ethanol, and I get 10% less MPG using this stuff (18 MPG average compared to 20)

listen to me...

it is really dumb NOT to run 91 octane in your car. when your engine is new, it adapts based on the gasoline run in it. you should ALWAYS start with the MINIMUM octane the manual requires. why? like i said, your engine is broken in on that octane. when your engine is broken in on 91 octane and later in its life it begins to ping, simply up it to 93. ping gone. when your engine is broken in and used to 93, what do you do when it starts to ping? you have to go out and buy octane booster for the rest of its life. it won't perform ANY better on 93 than 91, the "increased gas mileage" is a total myth - a TOTAL placebo effect - and does not justify the increase in gasoline cost. you should always make your engine used to running the bare minimum so if a problem ever does occur you can fix it with higher octane. when you give it the best, when the best doesn't become enough anymore you have nowhere to go. all you 93 runners out there have done your engine more harm than you know.

Your friends who are running the Avgas, do they have catless exhaust systems? Avgas will destroy a catalytic converter in no time flat. How often are they changing they're sparkplugs? Avgas is notorious for fouling sparkplugs in automotive applications.

My car has never seen anything less than 93 octane. The only way my car will see less, is if they stop offering 93.
My friends think I'm crazy spending the extra money on "just a car", but cars are my life essentially, so I kind of want to live in that metaphorical sense

getting 87 octane will not hurt your car NOR WILL YOU EVER NOTICE A POWER DIFFERENCE UNLESS YOUR GOING WIDE OPEN THROTTLE. end of story.

You're kidding right? I can guarantee you that if you ran 87 octane in your LS1 and made a trip down the quarter mile, you'd lose at least 3 tenths due to the computer pulling out so much timing.
