Top speed, im not talking limiter, what can it actually do?
Lets use my 99 SS M6 as an example, lets assume the speed limiter is removed. What would the car top off at?
Also what speed is the driveshaft good too? I have the 3.42s with my m6 so im sure ill hit the driveshafts critical speed before the other cars. ANyone know what that is?
My 96 impala ss tops of at in the high 140's due to earodynamic restrictions, and is speed limited at 153 due to the driveshaft. I guess the driveshaft starts spinning too fast after that speed and will start swinging around lik a jump rope. Im just using jump rope to explain it, obviously it wont flail around all crazy like that!

My 5.0 reached half-speed for the stock POS steel shaft at about 60-85 and after that was smooth. My aluminum shaft has yet to vibe. I would say that you wont have to worry about shaft speed with your aluminum shaft in the 99' and your top speed will come in 5th gear at around 160 + or - 5 mph or so.

There was a looong thread about this a while back... I think the highest stock top speed ended up being right around 167mph... for an average, Stanger88 is probably right on saying 160 +/- 5 in 5th gear. Good info on the driveshaft speed too... I never even thought about that being a factor in top speed before. I'm such a noob!

Stock is probably 160-170. Power is the limiting factor. When basically stock I had no real problem going 140 in my '98 A4, but once you reach fourth gear in an auto or fifth in a manual it is going awhile to gain MPH.

I'm in Germany. I was in 5th gear at about 5800RPM. My speedo was pegged and when I let off a little it took about 2 seconds for the speedo to start dropping. I did the gear calculator and it said I was going about 173mph.

Imn honestly quite surprised at how low it is, or how high my impala is? My 96 impala has a couple BS mods i did just cause i had parts laying aorund or i wanted some sound out of the exaust. With a K&N cone filter in place of the air box, factory silencers still in the intake tract, muffler delete with straight pipes all the way out the back, hyperjunk programming and a 160 T-stat, slightly shorter 285/40/17 vs factory 255/50/17 (corrected with HPP to within a 1/2" inch tire circumfrance) i got to 150 on a descent straight and couda probably hit 155 with a lil more room. Yes the car has some mods, but a k&n and muffler delete isnt exactly adding gobs of power!
Oh and this is a 2 ton+ whale of a 4 door family sedan! Not a slippery sports car with an incredible windshield rake. Dunno if i should be impressed with the impala, or disapointed in the f-body?

well when i had my 97 z28 a4 with the LT1, i buried my speedo a couple times and still had rpms to go everytime. completely stock too. now that i have my 99 ss m6 with the LS1, i have only buried the speedo once but never felt like it was gonna stop.

Keep doing what? Driving fast? What would a shift kit help anyway?
Third gear doens't max out till about 140 mph. What is really hard on them is WOT in fourth gear.
BTW: Last year my 3-4 clutch pack wore out. Probalby too many WOT downshifts to second gear. And I have had a TCI converter crap out on me twice, which took out some tranny parts. The second time it took out parts of a built tranny. Had that rebuilt locally but they messed up and it only lasted a week, was never quite right. Got that all straigtened out now, except I the rear end last Friday.

if you really want to know these numbers, you need a GPS. no speedo is accurate enough, as you don't know how much your tires are slipping at this speed. (do a google search on it, at least for us bikes this is a pretty significant number, i imagine it's the same for cars).
either way who really cares? what skill does it take to peg an accelerator in one gear and hold on for a few minutes? anything over 140mph is all you need imho.
