would you be able to address the oil pump issue with just getting a new oil pump or was it something with the block? what does it take to block off the egr system? im assuming thats the emissions you were talking about.

the EGR system was removed because the '01-'02 cars have a smaller camshaft that produces less emissions. GM found that after the cam swap, EGR was no longer needed to be emissions compliant. you can remove the EGR system and have the codes tuned out yourself if you don't have to worry about emissions in your state but it's a pain in the butt from the directions i've read.

i think the '01-'02 cars have less oil consumption issues than the earlier models but these cars still burn oil. your best bet for oil issues is to just buy german castrol 0W-30 oil. it's thick enough that the LS1 doesn't really burn it unlike the thin mobil 1's that burn off quickly. i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Not exactly. I use Mobil 1 0-40 synthetic and after 4000 miles not one drop missing. It's all about the differing tolerances during manufacturing. I have over 50,000 miles on the car and drive the hell out it too.

you're right, mobil 1 0W-40 is an excellent oil. i was referring to mobil 1 5W-30 which is what is recommended for our cars. i forgot to mention it though, d'oh! german castrol 0W-30 is about the same weight as mobil 1 0W-40 because mobil 1 is very thin on all its weights. that being said, if i couldn't run german castrol 0W-30 in my car, mobil 1 0W-40 would be my next choice. it's probably the 2nd best oil out there, definitely the best mobil 1 has to offer.

i just picked up 6 bottles of GC 0W-30 last night

Nah, just motor to motor differences, no specific years uses more oil than the others in my experiance. Supposedly there was a ring change in '01 or '02 to decrease oil useage, but on the cars I've seen it didn't seem to help much.

In my club we had at least one or more of all years of LS1s, and the '01 and '02 were actually the worst offenders of oil use. But I would say on average that model year has little to do with oil consumption.

Personally I've had 3 LS1s.

My '99 used only a tiny amount of oil.

My '00 used a good deal of oil.

My '98 uses ZERO amount of oil. And I run M1 10W30 too, which people say is too thin and will cause consumption. Guess what, no consumption on mine.

There is nothing "wrong" with the '98 PCM. The limitations that some people refer to are things that most people would never be affected by. For more info, do some research in the PCM section.

The '98-'00 oil pumps are not really a big issue. Only a very small amount of these pumps have failed. If your really worried, get an updated pump and forget it. Personally, my '98 has the stock pump and I sleep fine at night.

Sorry no pics.

If you ever get a chance to check out any '98-'00 F-body (actually I think this mirror goes all the way back to '94), you'll see the old design. I guess it's just like anything else, a matter of preferance. But I think the push button design on the newer mirrors feels cheap compared to the rocker switches on the old mirror, plus the more oval shape of the newer mirror provides less viewing area/coverage than the older mirror.

You can't get the older design from GM anymore. If you have a pre-'01 car they give you the new design mirror plus a wiring harness adaptor to make it work in the older car.

tee hee. one of the best episodes ever

Clinton: I know you don't think you're good enough for me. But
believe me, you are. Hell, I done it with pigs. Real, no-foolin' pigs!
Marge: Are you sure it's a federal law that I have to dance with
you?
Clinton: You know, I'd change that law if I could, Marge. But, I
can't.
Aide: [whispers in Clintons' ear]
Clinton: Aw, shoot. Quebec's got the bomb! Well, I gotta go, but ...
look, if you're ever near the White House, there's a tool
shed out back. I'm in there most of the day.

this is likely what i was thinking of. i knew it was a "revised" oil system, i just don't know the extent of the revision. if it's just a ring change, it sounds like to me they put a band aid on a bullet wound. oh well GC 0W-30 helped fix their mistakes

Actually, it has increased overlap which makes the EGR system uneccessary since the increased overlap leaves some exhaust in the chamber for the next combustion cycle anyway (the purpose of the EGR -- Exhast Gas Recirculation -- system is to intruduce exhause back into the chamber which improves emissions).
