Got mine through the Car.com route, too. Took me about 3 months going through all of the differant cars they had from all over the country. Almost bought one in Nashville, Tn., but found the one I have from a dealership in South Carolina. I just called the dealer, told him I was in Texas, we haggled on the price a few days, then struck a deal. Just call them up and be up front with what it is you want in your new ride. Good luck!

Just keep looking. The 4th gen's are rare! They were not produced in large numbers. That is the reason the plant was closed. My SOM 01 SS is one of 234 SS's in that color that year.

I bought my SS from a member here and couldnt be happier. It was in immaculate condition. I had to drive a couple of hours to go get it but it was well worth it. Also a friend of mine bought his SS off of ebay and hasnt had any problems. I know you are not certain about ebay but just look for someone with exceptional feedback and you should be ok.
