I've always have good results using a steamer and using a small brush. Steam the area good, then wipe off the grime. Takes time but works good.

spray it down with simple green, then take it for a drive and heat it up. When you get back spray it down with a hose. When it dries, just use some tire shine to polish up your parts and even give your engine a good smell!

^^^^you don't want to do that. You should degrease your engine when it's cold....spray it on & let it sit for awhile, then hose it off completely before driving. Simple green can be very corrosive to hot aluminum, ask me how I know

Read this, a sticky in the appearance section:

I've always thought about doing this but was unsure, cause of the engine heat you've had no problems? Do you put the tire shine on the intake? I've always wiped it off with a terry towel but it leaves thread strands on the intake, kind of annoying

If it's just dust/dirt, I use a spray bottle with a mix of distilled water and dish soap. I spray one area at a time and work it in with a paint brush. Once the whole engine bay is done, I rinse it all down and dry it off with a leaf blower. Then go back over with a towel to get any water that was left.

If there's a lot of grease and grime, I'd use some Simple Green.

Try Simple Green Aircraft. This is one of the best cleaners around IMO. I also used to use Engine Bright which worked well too.
