Default When a 10-bolt breaks......

When a ten-bolt rear end "breaks", what exactly breaks? Is it the shafts? gears? housing? From what I can gather, most people replace the entire thing in high HP/TQ applications. I would eventually like to put a stroked L92 into my M6 SS. Long prior to that however I want to make sure the rest of the car can handle close to 500 hp/tq.

Here goes... I used to have a pic but I dont anymore

My gears locked up, the ring gear had like 6 or 7 teeth break off and it cracked basically in half, the pinion gear broke off complete at the bearing and blew an 11 inch hole THROUGH the housing. the posi litterally shattered the biggest chunk left was about the size of a damn half dollar. then from there it proceded to strip my axles and break the yolk off the end of my driveshaft.

total destruction

and that was just from a hard launch in a almsot stock 96 Z28 A4

I hit a hard 1-2 and it ripped half the teeth off of the ring gear. Posi was equally mangled. I love 10 bolts!

Well... my housing and axle actually got bent so those I actually needed. Egh,...the new housing unit came with a NEW 3rd member anyways so atleast I'm get'n a fresh one. My old rear end had 107,000 miles on it anyway. It was probably on its way out especially after the beating I took it through last summer.

Putting in new gears will not remedy the shittiness in the design of the 10 bolt. It will still explode. It's not the material of the gears, but the actual size of the ring and pinion.

I know,..Egh!,..its a money issue right now. So the 10 bolt will suffice for now!

LMAO that made me literaly laugh out loud.

I like how a nissan rear end has a 10 second TT LT1 running it and it broke after MONTHS of track abuse..and the owner just replaced it with another stock one
