Default Change oil light

Well I'm sure I could have found this with a search but the search keeps saying 503 error.

Is the change oil light based off a basic counter that tracks mileage or is it some sort of cleanliness detection?

Either way, I had my oil changed about 2000 mi ago and with my current driving habits it should make it at least another 1000 (at least if I'm going to keep putting Mobil 1 in it). I suppose that the miles weren't reset. How do I reset it? Should I just ignore it until the actual time of my next oil change?

Tracks mileage.

Hold the trip reset button on the gauge cluster to reset.

It's not based on mileage - the oil life system is based on engine revolutions and engine operating temperature. It will come on anywhere from 3-10K (earlier under severe conditions) depending on driving habits. Page 6-17 '01 owners manual.

Mine was coming on too, but it was also accompanied by my guage reading "low" oil pressure....below 20psi. I took it into the shop to get it checked out and it ended up being a bad sending unit.

Thanks for the help. I make an effort to monitor my oil levels and cleanliness so I'm pretty sure that it's not in need of changing quite yet. I'll reset it and see how it acts.

it learns by mileage rpm patterns and temp patterns the best way to reset it is turn the key to the on position with the car off and push the gas pedal to the floor and release 3 times in 5 seconds it will reset it with out resetting your trip little gm trick
