Default speed limiter?

So i just went out and picked up my 98 Z-28 today and was just wondering what the speed limiter, if any, is on my car. I will admit, i'm too scared to try and figure it out for myself....

how hard/what does it take to get that taken off? or moved up to like 150? Or is that just not a good idea?

well mine got taken care of by a tune, it is now set at 240 or something like that lol. Its really not smart to take it off unless you got some Z rated tires to handle those speeds.

you can use hp tuners or efi live to move it up. im not sure how much some one would charge you for that, some shops do small changes for alot less than a full tune. i set mine to 250 even though i have never even been over 145 and prolly wont be.

No. It is not 118 for a Z. That's for a V6 w/o Z rated tires. Z's come with Z rated tires stock, therefore their speed limit is set at 155. And yes you can get rid of that with a hp tuner easily. I just did that with mine. It's kinda cool pinning the mph needle to the bar, then waiting a couple seconds for it to come back down after you let off.

My speed limiter is set at about 100-105 with the wife in the car, without her its like 155 although I only tested it to 150

No, some Z-28's came with the good ol' speed limiter set at 118 mph.
Mine was one of them.
And not all Z's came with z rated tires either.
Again, mine was one of them.
check your fact's dude.

exactly. not all z28's came with z rated tires. the speed limiter is set at 118 for those without them, for obvious reasons.

there is a sticker with tire sizes/capacities which says if they're z rated, there's also an rpo code for what wheels you have and what tires you have.

That's correct. Also, the speed limiter for the Z rated tire cars isn't at 155, it's suppose to be right at 162.

It's simple to test. Just run up to 130 or so. If the car does not cut off before that then it's set at 162.

And yes, it can be changed with tuning software.

In the middle of no-where as well, at least for me. I have had mine between 160-170, not exactly sure. If I could have gotten the shift-lite to come on, it would have indicated 170 according to the gear calculator which has always been nuts on for me

As for the accuracy of my speedo, well, I had a buddies GPS with me once, and I let out eariler than I planned due to over-driving my headlights, and I told him I glanced at the speedo when I let out and it was around 148. He plugged the GPS to his PC and the fastest I hit was like 148.3 or 149.3, can't remember. I thought that was pretty accurate!
