I'm still here! As was already mentioned, my oil change will be in the fall so I'll post the results then. I am waiting for my oil life monitor to count down to zero, so that will probably be at about the 7000 mile point on the Pennzoil Platinum.

You're running the Platinum now?

Any issues with consumption? Can you tell if the motor is consuming more or less or about the same as with GC? Can you notice a difference in low end power since Platinum is a good deal thinner than GC?

Sorry for all the questions, Pat

I won't know the consumption until I'm finished the interval, as I've found my dipstick still shows full even when it's a quart low. So based on previous oil changes I know that my engine uses about a quart every 5 or 6k.

It actually does feel a little bit more responsive at lower speeds now, compared to the thicker GC.

I'm running the Platinum 5w30..on my 2nd interval of this. For some reason my car burns this oil faster than any other oil i've tried..which kinda bums me out because i can get such good deals on this oil. My trip from Florida to NC...i burned about half a quart...than on the way back i burned about another 3/4 of a quart. That was the first trip tho i've taken with my 3.42's..so i dont know if it was just the higher RPM that i was turning on the highway that caused me to burn the oil...or if its just from the oil itself. Either way..i have some green GC that i'm gonna use my next oil change..and i'll see if it helps any..if it doesent than i'll switch to Mobil 1 10w40 HM to see if that helps any.

I use Castrol Syntec 10w40 since it gets very hot down here in Southwest Texas and car is over 100,000 miles, I must say that it works very well in my car, must be the climate but I get no piston slap or noisy valve train, it doesn't burn any oil. I'll stick to this oil for a while.

I use an additive with zinc in it on my 71 since engines with flat tapped cams need it to protect the lobes/lifters; zinc levels have been severely reduced in newer oils for emissions reasons. So in situations like this, the correct additive is not only helpful, probably necessary.

But Lucas is a no no in any engine:

Yep, I am running the 5w30. I didn't see the point of running the 10w30, when the 5w30 will do everything the 10w30 can do in hot weather and with the added benefit of flowing better in cold weather. I drive mine daily, all year round, and prefer to stick with one viscosity of oil the entire time.

Their racing oil is good, their street oil is not. It thins out way too quickly. I ran their 5w30 in my wife's car a while back and it thinned out horribly and showed higher engine wear too.

The ONLY Lucas product I trust even somewhat, in my car, is their non-synthetic gear oils!!

That cSt is fine for the mid-atlantic summers. The lower temp/cold cSt is a little high for the winters (even the slightly mider than here mid-atlantic winters). I would think about changing it out for late fall-late winter, and using their ASL 5W-30, or Series 3000 5W-30 (if you're sold on Amsoil, and want to stick with it).

If you live in Tejas, the Amsoil Euro 5W-40 would be a great year-'round oil, as would the Red Line 5W-40 (at least for the southern parts of the Lone Star state, as the RL has UBER-high cSts).
