What should it cost to replace thermostat?!?
Hey long time reader, longer time poster, but anyways. Today I was driving down the freeway and looked at my gauges because the check gauges light came on showing that my car was running near 250 degrees!!! I almost crapped myself. I just happened to be near a dealership so I pulled into there. I checked the coolant level which was normal and the oil level which was normal also. So I gave him the car for a diagnosis and they said it is prob. the thermostat and he was telling me that to replace the thermostat it would cost nearly 600 dollars!!! They havent really figured out what is wrong with it yet but if it was the thermostat, could that price be correct??? He said that the LS1 was different in that the thermostat was located with the water pump and thats why its so expensive. If you have had this problem or know what might be wrong, please chime in.
Thanks a lot guys,
Matt

Thanks so much for the information guys, you rock!!! Well anyways I received the car back a few days ago with and replaced not only the thermostat but the water pump also. Now I have another problem. I followed all of the steps given and now that I have hooked up everything back together I get a strange rumbling when I accelerate and now it just threw a check engine light. I am going to take it to get the code checked tomorrow. Really looking through the instructions I have the swap looked rather simple and now this crap happens. You guys wouldnt happen to know what I did wrong do you??? Any comments would help..Thanks so much again.

Thermostat $47.99: http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...mid=83&catid=5
Labor free if you do it yourself: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm
I don't find the $600 shocking. It is a stealership after all.

Overheating can be caused by a lot of things, but $600 for a thermostat is crazy. There's a how to for a 160 thermostat replacement on installuniversity.com

Ya mine was 120 at a dealer a year ago and I thought that was high with there specific coolant 1 unit replacement and thermostat and labor. There is a good chance it is the thermostat though. On a 100 degree day even if "driving down the freeway" like he said it's overheating it's either the waterpump or thermostat I would think from what he describes. Only ever had 1 waterpump fail on me (old car sitting for 10 years and bearings were worn so it leaked but still worked) and a dozen thermostats so I say thermostat. Seriously though guys check your fans if you overheat on the freeway? You guys might beat me in the 1/4 but practical experience=priceless

Listen....no lie...it will literally take you 5-10 mins to do.
Go to the passenger side by the battery/radiator where the biggest hose connects onto the housing of the waterpump. You will find a spout on the end of that with two bolts holding the spout on the end of the hose(10 mm). Take that off, then the thermostat would just be sitting there. Replace. put back together.
No point of putting a thermostat in unless your cars tune was set for the fans to come on earlier. If I were you I would just stick with a stock thermostat and have the fans set to come on around 180-185 degrees.
