I've been screenless since '99. No issues, knock on wood. I believe the reason GM put it in there was to smooth air flow across the sensor wires and not the entire air stream. That is what the stock computer looks at to compare to fuel calibration tables. Some cars just adapt to it better than others. Obviously a tuner should be able to vary those calibrations for the new set up. That is what GM did to the Z06 when they had it removed, just a change to the tune, man.
