Default Does less weight make a BIG difference?

If I had power nothing like no power steering, windows, lock, etc. and let's say no radio or speakers and no AC or heat, will that help out the weight alot or is it just a small amount?

In these cars, I've read that ~100 lbs. = ~.1 in the quarter. That's only accurate to a point. Crazy weight reduction won't get you into the 9's.

some people are just as crazy about weight reduction as power, and they are the fast ones a lot of times, it seems to me.

By the way, I've read that power windows and locks are less weight for some reason. I don't know that that's true, though.

Weight is a huge factor, as proven by physics:

Remember the golden rule : Force = Mass X Accelleration, or rearranged:

Accelleration = Force / Mass

Note that there is no favortism given to any term of the equation - each term is equally important.

I think that weight matters as much as hp and traction. Its a huge factor.

I think the bigger questions isn't if weight reduction produces results (which it obviously does), but whether its worth the effort for your particular car.

Mine is a DD that rarely sees the track. Removing 100lbs of stuff - whether its power accessories or radio, etc., really isn't worth it for 1/10th of a second on the street.

So, if you are going for a track-only car where every tenth counts, sure, it would be worth it. But I'd rather have the comforts of a modern car for my street-only car.

i think its equally important but its just easier for people to add more power than it is to get more weight out of the car.

+1 on that! I gained .2 and cracked 1.6 60's in my car all because of 50 lbs weight reduction over the nose of the car. There are Stock heads and cam cars going 10's now mostly because of extreme weight reduction. check out the stock internal list form the Drag results forum sticky..

Yes that is stock heads, stock cam, stock intake. only external bolt on mods. The top cars on this list are super light weights coming in around 3000 lbs or less with 4000 -4800 rom stall speed converters!

That is a realistic statement. Not all of us can drive a tubed chassis pro-street dragster to work everyday. I like things like a spare tire, seats, gadgets, ect. I guess you just ditch what you can do without and make up for the rest with a BIG CAM!

Yes but you are indeed the minority on this forum I would say. Most people on here go for the lightest quickest car they can muster with their money and time. Then again I realize the need for a cool grocery getter.

I don't think that equation applies here.

Weight reduction is great for lowering your times, but do you really want to remove the air bags, power steering, carpet, etc, from a daily driver?
I guess it just depends on how much you want to compromise.

As everyone said weight does play a huge factor, but it depends on what the car is going to be used for. If your keeping it as a street car then removing all of the saftey equipment, power steering, etc is probably not the best idea. If its purely a track car then go for it. If you look at the top times for stock internal cars you will see that, with major weight reduction, good rear and suspension setup, good tires, and usually a large stall in an a4, people have hit mid to low 11 second quarter miles times and i believe a couple have dipped into the 10's, so again weight reduction is a major help in cutting 1/4 mile times but is it worth it if it a street car?

Yeah, I didn't consider that. Mine is definitely not just a track only car. I use it to get to school and just everyday driving. I guess I'm better off to keep it but compromise a few things though so it'll be fast on the streets too =D

I say removing the extra not needed weight is fine, just depends what extent you want to go to with it. I took out the carpet padding and bumper supports was little over 50lbs together, thats un needed weight as I see it...

Yea, who needs bumper supports. They are definitely overrated.....

Mine are also out, but i wouldnt call them unneeded by any means. They are one of the stupider things ive taken out for weight reduction

I think your on the right track now. Plus, when you go to the track you can do simple things like buy 1 cloth seat and take out all your leather seats (front and rear if you dont already have cloth) and install just a drivers cloth seat. Then when your done with the track put all your seats back in. Also def take out the jack mounted in the rear wheel well in the trunk and you could evey pull your stock stereo just when you go to the track as well. Just a few ideas.
