Don't they go into an ultra lean mode, to save gas when cruising?

I thought only the Holden vehicles got that. When it "engaged," A/F ratio jumped to like 17 or some crazy **** like that. Maybe that was just the GTO/Monaro?

Best mpg I got was 29.5 on a cross-country trip. I had slowed down in Virginia where radar detectors are illegal. The car was fully loaded - me, the wife, and the dog, plus luggage and tools. I had to do the math twice to believe it. I still get 27 now on a road trip, although those don't happen much anymore since adding a Kirkey seat and only driving to/from events or just the occasional fun trip around town.

Before heads/cam/intake I was getting 28-30hwy and 18-20city. I had seen as bad as 13 city but I just got the car and wasn't being nice to it. After the H/C/I swap I've managed 26-27mpg highway and about 17-18city.
Worst mileage I've ever seen was a day at TWS road course. I went a little under 100 miles on the whole tank (F to E). I think I worked that out to 8mpg when I filled up.

On my trip right after my tune from TSP I was knicking the 30mpg mark on my way to Dallas. Total was about 435-440 miles on the tank, and I could have pulled a Kramer off Seinfeld and just kept going to get 30 mpg but I'm not going to run out of gas and starve my pump and injectors!! I get about 320 on a tank in the city w/ lead foot syndrome, so that's about 21-22 ish. Not bad for a 400+ horse car.

I get about 10-13 mpg with around a 235/245 duration cam and 4.11 gears. I never really seperated highway from city driving on it though... I know for stock parts they are very impressive for the numbers. Can't wait for the LS7 drop, it will probably pick up a few mpg.

You don't want to know what I get with mine around town.
Stalled A4 though.![Grin](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_grin.gif)
However, even my 11 second cammed/stalled A4 can get around 24 mpg on the highway.
Actually, no.
According to them you get better mileage with the tailgate up.

its not just the LS1's.
my old '97 LT1 M6 with 3.42's, loudmouth catback and SLP cold air (only mods) would get 31mpg all day on cruise at ~77mph. ~425miles to a tank!
i cant get anywhere near that in my 5spd Jetta daily beater![Sad](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_sad.gif)
my '99 A4 gets 22mpg interstate @ 70mph

We should link this thread over to the rice boards where the Nippon worshippers "think" that they beat us on mileage. I would bet that they get <half the mileage of even our heavily modded NA cars when they start getting into properly set up/tuned/"supporting fuel modded" BIG turbo scenarios.

BTW; even with 4.10s, on a mild bolt on car, I still get better than 30 mpg highway. I never officially checked the city number.

On a cruise out to the beach for a weekend I got 32 mpg going there and about 6mpg when I was actually there. But hey trying to be loud and show off is worth it. This was during Cuisin 07 at Ocean City, MD if anyone from here was there.

"Nippon superiority" focuses on building quality cars with great reliability and solid build, not tire shredding performance on the cheap. I love muscle and won't ever drive anything else, but if I had a dollar for every time something broke on my car or someone else's muscle car I could probably buy General Motors...
