Former Mustang, now LS1 owner has questions

i'll try to get a clip of it up sometime. Doesn't seem to be too bad of problem, just more annoying than anything. Oil pressure is rock steady at 75PSI or so at 4500RPM's. around 40 at idle. I put the car on ramps and used a prybar to check the noise around the block and such, I can clearly hear it on both the manifold to converter flanges, the EGR solenoid on the top of the engine and on the back side of the block on the passenger side. It is also very very plain on the oil pan directly below and behind the harmonic balancer. I tried un-plugging injectors one at a time to try and isolate the noise to a specific cylinder, didn't change a thing. I also tried changing the oil and adding some of that Lucas oil stabilizer to thicken it up a little, didn't change the noise at all. So all this being said, i'm sure it's not a rod/piston noise. The only thing that bothers me is that I can hear it the most on the bottom of the harmonic balancer, that is where the noise is the greatest. I used a long prybar and pressed it against the oil pan.
But what's also weird, you can hear it on the exhaust manifolds and the EGR valve, plainly.
Anyhow, after this LONG night, my friend and I decided to take it out and also take out my Mustang again. This time with my cutout off and no passenger in either vehicle. we got a dead even launch and the Z pulled around hard. by the 1/4 MPH in my Mustang, the Z ended up winning by around 5 to 6 carlengths. The stang runs 14.80@94.7 or so. I'm going to get my 1st chance to run the Z Friday, I don't think 13's should be all out of reach with just a cutout and K&N being my only mods.

As far as comparing the old mustang , yeah not going to be close the heads on the 96-98 2v 4.6's didn't flow very well at all .so even with cams and exhaust not going to get much extra power. The Cobra's and Mach 1's with thier 4v heads thats a differant story...

Mustang Mod list:
3.73 gears
Full PI heads + Intake swap
Comp 262ah-13 cams (pi .550/.550 232dur)
Stock manifolds
off-road H
flowmaster cat-back
SCT custom tune
24# injectors (not needed, just a future mod upgrade)
See/hear it run here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CXZz-3RH90
Sounds mean as hell, but just doesn't perform. It's kinda cool, the Z just idles wisper quiet without the cutout off, but yet stomps the stang.

I love the way Stangs sound, my 99 Cobra had Bassani LT's/ X/ Borla Race Catback and it sounded so mean. It sounded better at low rpm and under load than my Vette IMO. And equally exotic at high rpm. I never lost to an F-body in my Cobra and figured it was pretty fast. It had every bolt on and I drove the **** out of it. Still didn't prepare me for a H/C bolt on C5 though! My C5 pulls so much harder down low and at high rpm it just screams. It also pulls to the same 6800 rpm the Cobra did.

I had a newer blazer that done the same thing it ended up bein a bad starter....the spring that holds the bendix in broke and the gear was hittin the flexplate...."comon on newer gms with the high tourqe mini starters"It could be a cracked flexplate ive seen that alot and it will make a high pitch knocking sound.....
I cant say im a former stang owner..I still own one and gonna buy a cobra this spring I have the t/a and a lightly modded 95 gt......looks like your gt would destroy the stock ls1...espeacialy with the pi swap and cams + the gears that thing otta run low 13s to high 12s easily......you said it wqas an auot does it have a stall????if not thats why it aint runnin with the z...........
oh well good to see another mustang guy here there isnt many of us..........

Yeah wassup with that? Even the dolts at Motor Trend got a 13.8 1/4 mile out of a stock PI 99 Mustang. You should be running at least that with your Mustang. Many stock 99's have cracked the 13's...

I have a 2002 Trans Am 5.7 WS-6 with the same noise. I asked a mechanic who builds and races his own cars and a guy who owns 5 Trans Ams and they both said seperately that the fuel injectors make the noise and that it's normal. I'm going with that. John.

you'd have to come out here to our track, our usual D/A is 4500ft. I have raced many a stock and lightly modified GT out here, and won. A stock PI GT usually hits a 15.1 maybe a 14.9. We have a big Ford show here every year, only Ford powered vehicles are allowed to race. I raced an '05 GT stick 14.89, '99 PI with exhaust 14.95 and a Mach 1 14.01. Our D/A just sucks.
I do not have a stall, and yes it would help a lot, but still wouldn't have as much power as the Z. The LS1 puts out 350HP stock compared to the 4.6's 260 (PI) and 215-225 NPI. The stang weighs 3660 and the Z weighs 3880.
The Z is still my fav, as I still own the Mustang, trying to get it sold.

Jeez, i almost forgot I started this thread back when I bought the car!
Update:
Done a lot since back then. Got HP Tuners, tuned out my torque management, gutted cats and swapped in an '02 T/A motor, mainly because I wanted the stronger bottom end and the LS6 intake. Plus, the piston slap is GONE! Thank god. 1/4 times also improved. Just deleting the torque management took me to 13.4@105. T/A engine with bumped timing and a lid, 12.97@108.5! D/A on race day was around 2500FT.
Amazing for a stock motor! Not to mention a car with 2.73's that's running a 1.9 '60 with stock converter. I'm glad I sold the stang, this has been nothing but good stuff so far.
Next on the mod list is a Thunder racing cam!

The ticking or "knock" is pretty normal for the LS1 at cold or warm starts. Even some of the GM truck motors do it as well.
edit... just noticed you swapped a motor lol..

ya, my 2000 I have for sale is pretty noisy for about 20seconds cold and then it goes away. it seems to not be so bad if you drive it every day, its when it sits for a few days that it really slaps. My 2000 motor in my S10 doesnt slap at all though so IDK.

The LS1 is rather noisy and has a slight "metallic" tick when cold, I've noticed that when I first got my car and was once worried like you are. So, if it is what I think it is, then it's normal and isn't causing any harm.
