Question Ls6 ?

I am doing some resurch before buying a f-body. What types of cars had the ls6 in the from the factory, also what years? What is the advantage to a ls6 vs ls1. My main ? is what year of f-body stock would be a good choice and why? Also what years did the SLP'S exhuast exit the center of the bumper. Thanks for any helpful info.:

The LS6 was a GEN III smallblock V8 that shared the same architecture with the LS1 with the exception of different heads, cam and intake for the most part. It was found in the 2001-2004 Corvette Z06s, and in earlier Cadillac CTS-Vs. As for which model year LS1 F-body to look for, I would go with an 01-02. By then they would have many issues worked out, such as the "piston slap" that is found with the earlier model years. The clutch/transmission in the manual F-bodies of 01-02 also had something that made them better IIRC. One other thing, starting in 01 the LS1 had an LS6 intake manifold. As for your Center Mount Exhaust, that was a special option and no specific year got them.

actully, the later years (00+) had piston slap issues. its the earlier ones that didnt have the problem.

as for the clutch, 01 and 02's had an LS6 clutch and upgraded master and slave.

as for the LS6 blocks, thats all it was was the blocks, no heads, cam or anything else....dont hold out to find one with an LS6 block cause its not worth it.

Is the only thing different between the ls6 and the ls1 block oil flow?

more vapor flow than anything. and color if you want to get techinical. there are small windows cut at the bottom of the cylinders to allow airflow across the bottom of the cylinders.

All the 01-02 f-bodies had the LS6 manifold and few hundred of the last year cars ended up wit the LS6 BLOCK, but not the heads. I have heard rummors of some SS and Firehawks leaving SLP with LS6 motors but haven't seen or heard of a speciffic confirmed example.

Main difference was the size of those holes. The LS1 has them, but they are bigger in the LS6. I've heard they decrease pumping losses and allow air to move through the block. I've also heard they weaken the block.

I'd get a 01-02 car as most all of the problems were ironed out by then. Stronger rod bolts, better oil pumps, and minor if any piston slap.

I haven't been on SLP's site in a long time, do they not still sell the cme. Just by it if they do. 10-15% of all 01's and 25% of all 02's had the ls6 block. The windows(holes) in the ls6 are alittle larger and are in different spots. The blocks are a dull grey color, but so are some of the ls1's because gm used two different plants to cast the blocks. The plant that cast the duller colored ls1's used a better process which made them stronger so naturally when it came production time for the ls6's gm had them cast there and eventually all the alum. blocks.

I have never heard of any full ls6's coming form the factory in a camaro or TA; only the blocks.

No SLP does not sell the CME any more. You have to find one used. Any yes, the few cars that got got LS6 blocks it was that......block only, not the whole motor.

The LS6 in complete form never came in an F-Body. The block, intake and clutch yes. The heads and cam no.

IMHO ... get whatever year you can get a good deal on...

01- 02's as stated have the ls6 intake...

98's had weaker rod bolts...

the 98's pcm is a little more resilient to tuning, and u'll find alot of handheld tuners do not work with 98's (or 97 corvettes)

even if you found an 01-02 fbody that had an ls6 block, it would not produce anymore more power than a fbody with ls1 block, so don't put a thought into it.

FWIW, i own a 98, and got a smokin deal on it... like i said, if you find a good deal on a clean ls1 fbody, take it, there's not a big enough difference between the years to justify passing up a good deal and paying out the *** for a 02 model...
