Oh, and congrats to the OP!!
Yea snow is always fun. Ice is even better!

I thought I had 4.10's in mine until I found out how far off the tachometer was... totally useless.

Well if the tach is right you've got 3.73's because with 3.23's you'll run 2,000 rpms at around 67.

Do some snooping, look at the maf, throttle body, exhaust. Any signs of tampering? Like mentioned above, could have had stock parts put back. The rearend would be too much trouble to change back.
Jack it up, put a mark on the driveshaft and the tires. Turn the shaft. If it goes 3 1/4 times for 1 revolution of the tires, 3:23. If it turns 3 3/4 times, 3:73. It'll be close enough you'll know.

yeah i just checked it with the calculator and for 3.73's with stock tires it should be at 2000 rpms at 60 and 1777 for 3.23 so i think i got 3.73's too who would of guessed

edit: my car was stock when i bought it too

Yeah, i'm leaning towards the tach being about 200 rpm's off... we hooked the laptop up to it and compared my tune with a stock '98 A4 tune and everything in terms of the rear end gearing, tire size, etc came out identical and the speedo is completely accurate so it's gotta have 3.23's and a funky tach

finally got some pics! yes, it is filthy... it'll get a full detail when it's not 25 degrees out

What kind of gas mileage should I expect with the automatic and those gears?

And what kind of routine maintenance and tune up kinda stuff should I do? I have to assume that nothing was done
You can expect chics wanting a booty call.

Nice ride! Funny thing about my tach is it's spot on at idle, then loses 2-300rpm by 2k. Maybe it's a common thing with 98's who knows.

You're serious aren't you?

To the OP, those things are hard to keep stock. Beware.........it bites the wallet hard.

And one more thing guys, the stock tacks in these cars are almost always off a few hundred RPMs.

Stop tossing around the idea of having 3.73's stock, because you don't.

That has certainly not been my experience. Actually, I can sit there and watch my tach along with a real-time display from HPTuners showing the current RPMs as taken from the OBDII port, and they are identical. Now, the tach needle itself is slow, and won't keep up in first gear (and is why I have a shift light), but to say that they are off all the time is inaccurate.

I was thinking about putting those in my car, I have 2.73's right now. Did you notice much of a drop in mileage after switching?

I actually think under certain situation I might get BETTER mileage. A big part of my commute, I'm going 40mph in OD, which is lugging the motor at 1,100 rpm.
