MTI airbox lid Dynojet results! +16 rwhp on stock SS!
I posted this thread here because I feel that an airbox lid is THE first modification most LS1 owners typically do. Excellent power gains for minimal cash. Check this out!
I've owned this 02 SS for a week now, and I couldn't wait to see how she pulled on the Dynojet in completely stock form. The only power-making modification on this car is the factory option center-mount exhaust, which is just an SLP dual-dual 3" catback with different tips. Other than that, nothing else.
I guesstimated it would pull 305 rwhp stock, but I was pleasantly surprised when it nailed 321 rwhp! Backup pull was also dead on. Here is the BONE stock dyno graph:
Next, I installed an MTI airbox lid and punched out the MAF screen. The car remained on the Dynojet, with about 10 minutes of cool down time. Ambient temps were in the 97F range today. With just the addition of the airbox lid and removed MAF screen, it picked up 16 rwhp! Total of 337 rwhp, with my only non-stock modification being an airbox lid. Even kept the same filter.
The car is an M6, and currently has 12,900 miles on it. Here is a before/after dyno run of stock vs MTI lid
Hows that for "Bang for the Buck"??

Doubt I'll do headers anytime soon. I want to keep this SS nice and quiet, with no exhaust leaks or ticking noises that headers add to the mix. I can see a pulley, cam swap, and possibly a power adder down the road though. Since the car isn't going to be a drag racer, the stock 10-bolt should hold up just fine.

MAF screen is typically worth about 5RWHP too while only raising LTRIMS 2-3%.
(At least in my cars it has)
Cheers nice numbers!

Awesome numbers Tony!
Since you're keeping the stock manifolds, yet you're talking about doing a cam and a power adder down the road, do I see a BIG traditional split cam going in there?!
BTW Toxic-Z, the SLP lid sucks nuts!

Well if your doing 337rwhp with just those 2 mods, what the **** is wrong with mine. I bolted up FLP long tube headers, no cats, Borla cat back exhaust, SLP intake lid and K&N filter, and ported MAF from Thunder Racing. I only did 338rwhp and 352rwtq at MTI. I have an 02 Z28, 6-speed.
Man do I feel jealous!

When I first bought this Pontiac Formula in April of 1998, I had no idea that it would have gone as far as it has. I simply wanted a 12.50 ET car that I could drive everyday. But, these LS1 cars and their performance capabilities are truly addictive.
I know you have a new project with the 69 (which I'm jealous as all hell of ), but I'm sure the "I'll try this bolt-on, why not?" or "I remember how much better it felt after installing ______" will come quite a few times in the future, especially since you frequent MTI.
I know, because my best friend owns a speed shop in town, and every time I go in there, I always see something I could do to upgrade!
Good luck!

Tunning I want to do, but at $500. I can't tight now. I was just wondering if there might be something wrong with my Z. I feel after what he has done, Mine should be alot better than what I have.

Derek, modifying LS1 f-bodies is alot of fun, but you should also realize that my 98 Formula was one of the first LS1s on the net to try out a TON of stuff. We were creating things to do on these cars back then. Now I know exactly what works and what doesn't, and I know where to draw the line between performance vs comfort. Personally, I don't like rowdy, loud, rattling vehicles for daily-drivers. My Formula was actually very refined for the times it ran, but I did take it to extremes that I would prefer not to dive into again. At least with this particular car
No more rollcages in daily-drivers. No more leaky exhausts. No more stumbling idles. No more noisy interiors because of all the racing suspension parts. All those take away from the enjoyment for me.
