My personal experience with the GM V8 is what convinced me to go LS1, twice. Yes, I drive a lot. Here's my History with the GM platform.

94 Caprice 9C1 with LT1 A4 stock engine/tranny bought it at 79k drove it to 220k, ran well when sold, just optispark replacement. Did not use oil.

93 Z28 LT1 A4 bought it 80k sold at 212k, Optispark again but tranny and motor still original, ran well when sold. Did not use oil.

Current 98 Z28 A4, bought around 80K, drove until ~150k and broke sunshell in Tranny, so while tranny out threw in Vig 3600. Still driving this one every day, now about 160K, uses zero oil and runs 13.1 at track. Zero done to motor. Does not use oil. Drives perfectly straight/smooth like a new car still, I expect 200k easy out of this one. I might even aim for quarter-of-a-million this time just to be able to say I did.

Now also own 97 Vette but it's in the garage most of the time, but no worries about reliability with it. About 40k on it.

Each one of the above got no less than 23mpg.

Here's the kicker, I USE WALMART BRAND OIL AND ONLY CHANGE AT 6K. Personally, I think synthetic oil and changing at 3k is a super waste, and I have the history to back that up. Been using the cheap stuff all my life and never had an oil-related problem in any of my say 30+ vehicles that I've owned. Maybe I'll do the math sometime how much I've saved over the years in all my cars (above is just a fraction). I'm in my 40's.

Feeling good about my 107k now!

Have you experienced any oil leaks with any of your high mileage V8's?

I was told that V8's with a high mileage is subject to oil leaks no matter what, but I refuse to believe that.

It seems like the newer ones have a longer lifespan.

The new Gen III + V8's will last a very long time. Gm did a excellent job in their design. Good oil changes, and I would feel the engine would last the life of the car.

What's the most anyone has heard of someone getting out of an LS1 with a piston slap?

Its good to see them last that long, couple friends spun bearings on ls1’s with fairly low miles , so I was starting to have my doubts.
