There is a debate about this?? If I run anything less than 'GOOD' 91 octane I have pinging under WOT and the car run like crap... not to mention the mileage drop.

It's worth the extra 10 cents a gallon to put in the good stuff.

I suppose you guys cheap out on oil too?

I avg 20 ~ 21mpg for a tank on cheap crap (only stuff available in my town and if I get desperate I have to use it) and 25 ~ 26mpg for a tank on 91 octane from the next town over. Considering I use a tank per week 29x miles of commute... it's definately worth filling up on the 'expensive' stuff by the end of the week.

Now that does it!!! Claims of 5 mpg LESS on cheep gas? I won't believe it. Think about the water injection trick. Fuel mixed with water that won't compress and takes up volume. The engine runs way weak, but MUCH MORE MPG of fuel. I use the highest available so my car likes it, not so that I get rich from buying cheep gas.

BTW, even premium seems crappy these days, anyone agree on that? Are we getting robbed?

Peace,

well put.

for all you guys considering running lower octane, plug in a scanner and watch all the knock retard going off with lower octane. sure the pcm will retard timing, but it waits until there's detonation to do it.
hell, in the summer heat i got knock with 91 octane on the stock tune.

the only debate here is if you want to damage your motor or not.

of course, if you're that stuck on 87 octane, you could just have your car tuned to run on it (take out a lot of timing).

Just what I did. And over the past 4+ years I'm sure I've saved an assload of money (literally, you could fill some fat *** with the wads I've saved from it). So, using the above analogy, it's like ******* the hooker, with a condom, for cheaper than people ******* her with 91 octane.

It may work..........it may not. I have no desire to find out. I would rather pay the extra 20 cents a gallon, than risk paying thousands on a new motor. That is just one risk I am not willing to take.

We tried it in one of our Z28s. For us on a 60 mile a day comute the Premium(Shell and chevron) was consistantly 2-4MPG better then the cheap stuff covering the price differance.

Just our experiance on one of our 400HP engines take it for what it is

Affirmative. Sure, I could possibly get a few more ponies (maybe 4-5?) to run with higher octane and a different tune, but is it worth the extra cash every time I go to the pump?? I think 400rwhp is pretty good for being a modified 5.7 / 350 block, naturally aspirated. That 4-5 hp would cost more and more additively every time I have to fill up, which really adds up over the years...I'd rather use the money saved for more parts, cleaning products, beer, pizza, condoms, etc.

What are you guys calling "good" 93? Shell, BP, etc. all use 10% ethanol around here and all make my car run like crap. Kroger is the only place that doesn't use ethanol and my gas mileage is better with it.

I see you on streetcarforums to lol!!!

Anyways there is an exxon off shallowford road at hamilton place that is 100% gas. Its posted everywhere and always busy. I have been going there becuase of that. I figure its worth the extra two miles out of my way.

Yea, that Kroger thing was when I was in Knoxville. I moved back to Jasper and luckily the closest gas station to me has 93 and no ethanol. Im moving to Atlanta Tuesday and I hope there is a close gas station with no ethanol...

Whats your name on SCF?

Look.. I do agree that 87 will be okay, due to the timing retarding, due to knock sensors and o2 sensors.. But You should still run it on 91....

I still always have run mine on 91, when I was stock, and now that Im gonna be over 11.1:1 compression ratio in a 402, all I can run is 91 and no less...

Now im sorry, but a lot of you guys saying " No you HAVE to run 91" arent wrong, but some of you sounded like idiots, trying to explain why, without even understanding how things work...

the only knowledgeable post I saw here was from hammertime..
