premium gas debate
i was wondering recently whether or not premium gas is really necessary for our cars all the time? i am going on a trip soon and it will be nothing but highway miles under 2k rpms. i have read conflicting reports, showing that 87 octane in the ls1 is fine for low-rpm usage, but don't know if that is accurate.
in times of high gas prices and long trips, if 87 will suffice over 93, i think saving $.35 per gallon is worth it, albeit i won't be WOT it anytime during the trip.

lol that sig is pretty ridiculous. well i can't guarantee not going over 2k, because there will definitely be acceleration, but the lot of the time i will be cruising below that level.

Will your car safely run on 87? Yes, that is what the low octane spark table is for...
Will you sacrifice some performance on 87? Yes, it will retard the timing to a safe level as determined by the calibration and the knock sensors.
Will you damage the engine if you go WOT on 87? The computer should save you from internal damage due to spark knock or detonation caused by low octane fuel. The chance of damage increases only marginally over 93 octane.
Will your car return to normal operation after your trip? Yes, although it may take a couple tanks of fuel for it to relearn/return to the high octane spark table.
Hope that answers your question.

As for the subject at hand, for every one of us LS1 zealots who will never use or recommend 87 octane under any circumstance, GM knows that there are 2 knuckleheads out there who will beat the **** out of their car on the stuff.

My car only requires 87 (one of the few perks of the V6 lol) but if I had the LS1 I'd just put premium in it. It adds up to what, $3.60 difference for a fill-up from a bone-dry 18 gal tank. Not enough of a savings to really worth bothering putting lower-grade fuel than recommended in. Plus, you know that if you put regular in, you'll end up wishing you had premium when that ricer or stang pulls up next to you and gives you that rev

well part of the problem is that i'm in post-sale-of-corolla syndrome and was used to regular and 27 mpg around town. now it's back to 17/25 mpg and premium gas. obviously i was open to alternatives

I used minimum 93 octane. Once in a while I'll put in 100 and beat it up lol. I remember when 4 bucks a gallon for 100 was outragoues Now premium is 4.51 here for 93 and 5.5x for 100! Buy a beater for a few hundred if your that worried about gas prices.
