i have a 2000, and im sorry but it holds no where near the 16.8 some of you are claiming. when my gas light comes on, it usually takes 13 gallons to get it back full again.

2001 Z28 - When I hit E and the light comes on it takes ~12 gallons to fill...if I drive for a while with the E on I've have to put in as much as 12.5. Strange.

98 camaro z28. No "Check Gauges" light comes on, when it gets into the red line on empty it usually takes 13-13.5 gallons to fill her back up. i average from 280-330 on a tank depending on driving... 2.73 A4 car.

Because just about all cars do this. The manufacturer does this on purpose.

Would you like to have the light come on and then 2 miles later run out of gas?

99-2002 16.8 gallon fuel tank according to the owner's manual. As far as I know the fuel light comes on when you have about three gallons left, that may be the reason most only need about 13 gallons of fuel when the light comes on, but I'm not putting it to the test.

MFG's do this because fuel pumps use the fuel itself to keep itself cool. Many times if you run a car low repeatedly or run it out of gas completely it will fry the pump. Its a good idea not to test the theory of 3 gal left in the tank. Its cheaper to just fill it up rather than change fuel pumps.

i think i have 14 gallons here. well, thats how many it takes when im on E. But i just got 320 miles on that last tank. not too bad if you ask me. I like to rip it at times, but i can drive real easy other times too. so it is a good average.

That's why it's better to calculate MPG. Miles per tank is not going to give an accurate reading.
