Default Engine Identifciation

I just started getting into my new project, a1999 Trans Am. I have to replace the cradle so I pulled the alternator to make it easier. I noticed a 6.0L cast into the block on the drivers side.

I do not know where any of the engine codes are located since this is my first project of this kind. There is not a # cast into the heads but there is a "0113" cast into the block just in front of the passenger side head. Can someone please help me identify this motor?

There also seems to be a "317" stamped into the head at the rear of the drivers side.

NBM-LS1 - I am thinking the same thing.

OP - Can you get pics of any other casting stamps? Is there a 243 stamped on the heads?

I thought it was an LS2 also but it has a cast iron block.

No pics of the top but here is what started my search...It's on the drivers side front of the block.

So is it an advantage or a disadvantage to have it in the car? Does the lq4 produce more HP than the LS1?

Not off the shelf "as is"... 300-325 hp and 360-370 ft.lb tq.

An advantage to the vortec 6000 series engine over the LSx family is the ability to overbore for NA build-ups. It is a plentiful engine and much more inexpensive than the LS1/LS2. It's not a bad thing, but it is certainly not a LSx.

Good luck with the project.

Well I hope the fool who crashed it into a pole did more than just swap motors. Wish I knew the owner who last drove this thing was so I could find out. I guess thats what happens when you inherit a project...This has been sitting for a couple years so who knows...

Thanks for the help!

That cast iron block is good for forced induction. it's alot stronger. You have 366 cubes, get a cam and a nice set of heads. You'll see some nice numbers out of it. I would see this as an advantage!
