Default Thermostat interchange between LS1 and LS2

Greetings folks, I'm a new member here. I'm pretty good with cars, but most of my experience involves 4-cylinder engines. Please excuse me if this comes across a little garbled, I'm still learning about these engines.

We're putting an LS1 into a Miata. The engine's out of a Firebird. It's running (what a great sound!) but we've hit a snag with the thermostat. We installed an LS2 Corvette water pump to give a little more clearance up front. Now we find that the LS1 thermostat won't fit into the water pump - you can see a picture here: http://www.flyinmiata.com/projects/LS1/index.php?UID=62

So we ordered an LS2 thermostat, same problem. Is there a special thermostat (and possibly housing) that I need?

Thanks for any advice!

LS2 thermostat is not built into the housing, it will be separate.

Then the LS2 thermostat that NAPA gave us is not an LS2 thermostat. That helps explain things!
