Ok I understand use a drill bit but I want a .12 gap? So that's a 1/8 bit gap between shim and flex plate?

I see what your saying Dan. Not feeling a Berger though lol. I just think they kill the *** end on a navy car. I have the hook up with a vinyl guy. Think I'm gonna try that route just to get a feel for colors at a much cheaper way than painting. Then I'll know what I wanna do paint wise. My fiancees uncle owns a vinyl shop. He has a car that tge vinyl is like 5yrs old and it still isn't cracked or faded. I was surprised. The car isn't garaged either.

You need to know your total gap first. If its .25 meaning a 1/4 bit fits between the converter feet and the flexplate with the converter fully seated in the tranny then you would want to shim .13 to get to the final desired .12 gap.

0.25 total
-.13 shim
-----------------
0.12 left

You add in a 0.13 shim then your 1/4 bit no longer fits. Then pull the converter back (forward rather) exactly 0.12 and the feet are sitting on the shims/flexplate. Meaning you have only pulled it 0.12 from full engage of the transmission.

Ok cool should have that done first thing tomorrow! Just to clear up some curiosity what's the point for the .12 gap? What if its smaller or larger, what would happen if it wasn't .12?

The further the gap, the further you are disengaging the converter from the transmission to get it to reach the flexplate. The gap is how far you are pulling the converter back out. The input spline has quite a bit of variation room but the converter snout with the two square machined indentions drives the pump (I think). The aren't cut very deep, so as you pull the converter back you disengage them, as well as the other splines inside the converter. That being done wrong can cause catastrophic failure down the road.

If I'm not mistaken, the converter will push on the rear of the crank snout and cause a thrust bearing failure if it's too close (ask Steve). Not sure if it's too far out. I would think shifting problems would occur and fluid loss if it's too far out. I'm not that experienced with them really. Just know how to tear'em up ahem I mean down

Typically forward thrust on the crank is caused by other things too....but its kinda like an automotive unicorn, its hard to get a straight answer when discussing thrust bearing failure. Misaligned front acc drives can cause it, so yeah its tricky. And, actually you M6 guys are not immune, clutches can cause forward push and TB failures as well. But, mostly what I have read about hanging the converter too far out of the front of the trans will cause the converter hub to break and cause a broken trans pump. Meaning your trans and converter will need reworking. That can get pricey quick. Space it too close and don't give the converter room to swell under pressure, and that's when it pushes on the crank. Although, there are multiple theories regarding these types of things.

got ya, silver would look good too, but you mentioned low key not to flashy is why i said black and when done right doesn't to look bad. dont like the RS kit but had a friend that had a SS with one and stainless inserts and ss emblems and looked good. he also has black stripes. A lot of the new 5th gens come in navy and black stripes now too

as far as your fiancees vinyl shop. im looking to get some black stripes on side of my cowl maybe.
