You can't dis/connect the hyfire with the engine running but it does come with a bypass connector. I have mine mounted in the glove box and just like you are describing, I take it out of bypass mode when using the nitrous. I even ran an LED in parallel with the input power so I have a signal light to remind me that the box is energized. The reason for that is the box will get good and hot after 20 minutes or so. Some have mounted it under the passenger seat where there is better air flow.
The 685 Hyfire VI is a great controller and I consider it the best modification for the money I have spent.

You can wire it up like me, I can run my box all day and it will only pull timing when the nitrous is armed and the window switch reaches 3,000 rpms. Use the purple window switch wire to ground your relay and run your retatd yellow wire off the 12 volt out of the relay and walah!

Why don't you want to use the box all the time?

I know that they do produce some heat, but mine is in the engine bay, so I never really considered that aspect.
I guess that might be a reason for the bypass. Might want to make sure that the unit's power is removed as well. I think it would still create heat even if bypassed.

Besides all of that, because I only use it with the nitrous (I have it wired into the nitrous circuit for timing and windows) the glove box is left open when in use. I choose not to use it as a DD part because it adds one more component to the ignition system. A good opti-spark high energy system is more than adequate but the Mallory adds features to the function. The additional voltage was never an issue for me so I don't even want it on for regular driving. To each his own though.

I wired mine to run all the time and only pull timing when the nitrous is armed. Also it is in the glove compartment and has been in there the last year and a half with no problems what so ever. I also daily drive my car and it never acts up. That being said I have seen people have problems with them in a confined space, Mallory even recommends putting it somewhere with good air circulation.
