You can't dis/connect the hyfire with the engine running but it does come with a bypass connector. I have mine mounted in the glove box and just like you are describing, I take it out of bypass mode when using the nitrous. I even ran an LED in parallel with the input power so I have a signal light to remind me that the box is energized. The reason for that is the box will get good and hot after 20 minutes or so. Some have mounted it under the passenger seat where there is better air flow.

The 685 Hyfire VI is a great controller and I consider it the best modification for the money I have spent.

so if i turn my motor off and then put the box in bypass mode it would just be running on my na tune right??? and then before i use nitrous i can turn the car back off turn the box on and its ready to go for the nitrous???

You can wire it up like me, I can run my box all day and it will only pull timing when the nitrous is armed and the window switch reaches 3,000 rpms. Use the purple window switch wire to ground your relay and run your retatd yellow wire off the 12 volt out of the relay and walah!

That's the way to do it.

Why don't you want to use the box all the time?

I know that they do produce some heat, but mine is in the engine bay, so I never really considered that aspect.

I guess that might be a reason for the bypass. Might want to make sure that the unit's power is removed as well. I think it would still create heat even if bypassed.

Brad

You can wire it the way I did and still use the bypass harness

I have read everything I could find regarding the Hyfire ignition and they do occasionally fail. My logic for keeping the box inactive most of the time; why supercharge your ignition system when you don't need to? If you use it when you need it then I figure it should last indefinitely. The box gets quite hot when in use and if it is in a confined space with no air movement - like the glove box, then it gets very hot! Personally, I like the glove box location because it is protected, clean, accessible and very visible when making adjustments. Mine is tilted up and canted so I can fiddle with it from the driver's seat.

Besides all of that, because I only use it with the nitrous (I have it wired into the nitrous circuit for timing and windows) the glove box is left open when in use. I choose not to use it as a DD part because it adds one more component to the ignition system. A good opti-spark high energy system is more than adequate but the Mallory adds features to the function. The additional voltage was never an issue for me so I don't even want it on for regular driving. To each his own though.

I wired mine to run all the time and only pull timing when the nitrous is armed. Also it is in the glove compartment and has been in there the last year and a half with no problems what so ever. I also daily drive my car and it never acts up. That being said I have seen people have problems with them in a confined space, Mallory even recommends putting it somewhere with good air circulation.
