Default question about running a 'fake' blow down tube

I dunno how people are on this site, so hopefully I don't get flamed here...

I've got a C6 vette and my nitrous and nano bottles are mounted on a thick peice of carpeted MDF board cut to fit the hatch floor. This way I don't have to drill through the car or mess with anchoring the bottles to a plastic floor.

I've always run w/o a blow down tube, but now that I'm going to the track they want me to have one and the 'leave the bottle out somewhere, then put it back in thing' probably won't work.

I'd like to just drill a hole in my MDF board and run a cheap 180* blow down tube into the hole to make it look like it's going through the floor, but then it won't go past the true carpeted floor underneath.

If I don't run it straight into the carpet so its plugged, and I drill the hole in the MDF a bit larger than the tube, will the nitrous still vent ok in the event that the disk pops?

I figure this would also keep it from venting on me if it pops since i've got it mounted close to the gap between the seats so I can open/close by hand and read the pressure gauge on the bottle.

Anyways... thoughts? If any other C6 guys are on here and have better ideas that they've used, please let me know, I'm flexible as long as it doesn't involve drilling holes in the car.

If your going to buy a blow down and take the time to make it look like it works, why not make it work?

Just drill the hole and paint the bare metal. and make it work.

It'd be like $25 and a couple minutes to drill the hole in the MDF... I just really don't want to drill a hole in the plastic rear tub of the car.

I'd even splurge to run some SS line somewhere, just don't see any existing holes in bottom of the car like I've had w/ my steel floor'd cars.

use a flexible one and make it functional. There's a reason that is a required safety device.

If you ever had a nitrous bottle rupture disc blow inside the car, you'd think twice about that and do it right... I was carrying my extra bottle to the track inside the car once, and the heat from the exhaust through the floor caused it to rupture... all I could do to get the car off the side of the road and get stopped - couldn't see a thing inside the whole car!

Why not run a line up to the front of the car and out the hole for the shifter or go through the firewall? If the nitrous vents while you're in the car you could suffocate and die hence the purpose of the blow down tube.

I've never had a disc blow... the few stories I've heard or read about it made it sound like it wasn't that bad... from the examples above though, this doesn't seem to be the case. I guess I'll start pulling up some carpet and trim pieces to hunt for a good spot to drop some -8 line out of the car.

Im gonna have to do it too. I dont necessarily want to drill holes either but some RTV ro something similar will close it right back up and nobody will ever see it. You can do it in the trunk area just above where the exhaust runs inside of the two pieces of metal frame that run back there. It will come out above the diff or over axle pipes. Just make sure to get towards the middle back to stay away from the gas tanks. I may even do mine into the wheel well.

i dont have a blow down tube but i did have to drill 2 holes in the back area of my C6 due to the adjustable coilovers. the best way i could think of was to cut small X's in the carpet then pull it back and drill the smallest hole i could get away with, that way when im not adjusting the the coilovers the holes are not seen as easy.

Anybody use this hose? How much pressure will it hold?

C-5 application. If you take the nitrous out, just put a body plug in the hole.

No issues with Tech at the track, because its functional.

^^ You C5 guys have a lot more trunk space. The C6 is flat all the way back and doesnt have that little dip you guys do.

use a -8 stainless hose and put a bulkhead fitting in there. looks good, its easy, and effective

later on you can just put a body plug or something like that into the old hole. i've never been one to skimp on the safety stuff, and think about 10lbs of nitrous exiting and filling the car up. especially if its nitrous plus, which most is, that has a small amount of sulfur in it to keep people from abusing it.

So can I just run the -8 line between the gap in the carpets up behind the seats and run it under my MDF sheet w/ the bottles on top of it? I assume the SS line is reenforced enough that the weight won't crush it closed? Then I'll just drill a small hole for a bulkhead fitting back by the mufflers. This option wouldn't be terrible since I wouldn't have to cut the carpet and could plug the tub pretty easy.

This is almost exactly how I plan on doing mine. The line should be flexible enough to make it work.

The trick will be to use some sort of bulkhead fitting otherwise you will get a of noise via that hole.
