Default Issues at the track yesterday

Well let me start by saying I havent even popped the hood since I hauled it home and I am stuck at work today until 8pm so maybe Wednesday I can start working on the car to see whats wrong but I will try to explain here and see if you guys have some ideas.

This was my first time on a 1/4 drag strip, I always race at a 1/8 mile. I made my first pass and N/A until about the 1/8 mile mark and let out, second race I sprayed all the way through the 1/4, third race I ran N/A and then parked the car for a while. When I started the car up for a 5th pass I noticed it was running ruff and then it back fired.. I let it sit and idle for a bit and every minute or so it would "burp" (small backfire) coming from the exhaust, not intake.. I do have a small exhaust leak but its not "bad".. I was running a 67 pill which Zex says is a 150 shot, other brands say its a little more than 150.. Bottle was right on 950lbs and I run NGK BR7EF's which have had maybe 1.5 10lb bottles ran on them.. gapped at 35.. Just wondering if I killed a plug or melted a ring land or had a lifter give up.. hell I dont know enough about this stuff to guess.. What I can say is that the miss is NOT all the time, If I rev it up a bit is smooths out for a second, then goes back to missing.. So far no check engine light either..

Im sure you need more info that I forgot to provide so just ask

Sounds like a plug. Same scenario happened with my buddy's car Friday night. Changed the plugs, and the problem was gone.

Ok guys, everyone keeps saying plugs and its putting my mind at ease Is it fairly normal to burn through a set of plugs that fast?? I have put maybe 2k miles on them with a total of maybe 1.5 bottles...

Not normal to go through plugs that fast but possible if the tune is way off. I had an o2 sensor go bad that gave me similar conditions.

I'm gonna guess and say you have never even looked at the plugs after spraying this motor since you haven't popped the hood and don't know the plugs condition after spraying?

Originally I read the plugs with the tuner after dyno pulls but I will admit that was with a 100 pill and everything looked good at that time.. But no, I dont make check them on a regular basis as I just kinda figured that after the tune was right, it was right.. no reason to go back and keep buying spark plugs.. Well where I messed up was moving up to a 150 pill without checking plugs, having the car tuned again, nothing.. I just got greedy and now the car managed to scare me so I wont try it again :-/ .. I have a brand new set of NGK's going in now and figured I would post up some pics of the old plugs to see if there is any information on them at all.. I know with having both N/A passes as well as N2O passes on them they are virtually impossible to read but maybe there is still some information on them???
This round of pics is with the flash, I will post another set without flash.. They are the back two plugs on the right bank (6 & 8) and the one that is all brown on the strap is the very back plug (8).. I got these two out and had to go to dinner with friends so I havent seen any of the rest of them yet but I always tackle the hard ones first lol

Its alright bro we all make mistakes.

Whether we learn from them or not is what determines the final outcome.

You are doing the right thing by asking questions, sorry if I sounded like an ***. I'm trying to be nicer on the boards lol.

It's really hard to tell anything on those plugs. I'm going to leave this for ATV, Carter, Shiz or camscam or dave to determine, but I'm pretty sure they will tell you to buy a couple sets of plugs and make some passes and check them after each pass.

Once you get it right and the plugs look good on a known tune-up then you should be ok to not check them each pass, but at least check them once or twice a night or when you get home from the track.

When you want to step up the shot size next time you know what to do

I would say its either your O2 check or make sure you dont have any wires by your headers to that are grounded out Or you nicked a plug on that pass.
What is your timing at on spray? What fuel are you running? What kit do you have?

Did you get all the plugs out?

I am with dnky that you might have nicked the strap on a plug.

I wouldnt be set on the plugs being the only problem. Check your o2 wires for grounding out, turn them off and see if it clears up before making a trip to the track.

car was tuned on a 100 shot and then you put bigger pills in and didnt check the tune to see if it was knocking? a 67 pill is a little closer to a 175 as a 62 is a 150 kit. 100 to a 175 kit is enough of a jump to where I would want to check it out to see if it was knocking.

Work hasnt allowed me any time to pull any plugs except the passanger side and nothing looked wrong there.. Its really an odd problem, I have sprayed several times now on the 150 pills and even told my tuner about it and he said it wasnt my best decision but he did leave some room when he tuned for the 100 shot so I shouldnt be hurting the car. As far as total timing I dont know.. I am horrible about not asking enough questions and I just let him tune the car and didnt really ask too much about it.. I will find out though.. I know the 100 shot the car ate like candy with no issues at all.. I fired it up shortly before taking out the passanger side plugs and it was running like a top for about 2 min, then by the time I got it turned around in the garage it started missing again.. I will be sure to check my O2 wires and plug wires but it seems odd for me to not get a check engine light for an O2 sensor or a missing cylinder

Its a Zex kit with the tiny control unit "box thing".. As said already I dont know what the timing is as the tuner took care of all that.. What I can tell you is that he tapped into my traction control wire at the PCM and wired in a relay that is attached to my activation switch so as soon as I activate the system it yanks out timing so I can spray. Its enough that you can hear/feel the idle change.. I run 93 pump gas from Exxon..

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us.

Now get out there and get some times on the 150. Make sure you are pulling enough timing on the 150 since your tuner pulled the timing amount for you.
