New to NOS
I was wondering what are the most common mistake newbies make to NOS? Also what are the best side dishes to get with my kit when I get it? I will be getting a kit after I pay my car off, only 4 more months!!
Most common mistake...at least one that can have serious consequences....IMO is getting greedy. HP gains come in gobs with nitrous. Its very easy to exceed safe levels. Self restarint is important <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />
1. Use appropriate jet sizes for motor;
2. Retard timing 1-1 1/2 degrees for each 50 HP of NOS;
3. Install Fuel Pressure Safety Switch;
4. Have more than adequate fuel pressure, i.e. in my case I upgraded from a Holley Red to Holley. Blue fuel pump (from 7 psi to 14 psi). A Fuel Pressure Regulator is a good idea;
5. Use higher octane fuel (depending on your individual application);
6. Don't apply NOS to an already weak and troubled motor;
7. Apply NOS gradually until you see the effects on your motor (and nerves);
8. Use a Jacob's Nitous Mastermind Controller to apply NOS gradually, and utilize several built-in safety features;
9. Have adequate gauges that are regularly monitored when applying NOS (in my case, Fuel Pressure, NOS pressure, Air/Fuel Ratio, Pyrometer, etc.;
10. Maintain proper MOS bottle temperature (about 900 degrees);
11. Have a sound ignition system, such as MSD;
12. Start with good engine components such as cylinder heads, rods, etc.;
13. Read your plugs regularly;
14. Use appropriate spark plugs (check with NOS or others, but in my case a 7 heat range NGK that was 3 or so heat ranges colder than stock.)
15. Don't apply NOS at less than 2500 HP;
16. Rev limiter is a good idea;
17. Don't spray NOS for longer than 15 seconds;
18. Allow 5-10 minutes betwwen NOS runs for engine cool-down;
Hope this helps.
