I think you will get a wide range of opinions on this subject. I use Mobil 1. 10/30. No engine oiling issues yet. I still believe that any Oil that is of the latest rating is best to use in any motor. (Is SM the latest?). I believe the api rating over anything else. Being that I only use the car for racing now, Justify it in my head to use synthetics. I have not heard of any oil related failures with this engine yet. I believe synthetics work better at extreme temps and that is the only reason to use them. I believe regular oil with an SM rating is best. I believe it is more important to change the oil regularly than anything else. I also believe alot of hot rodders waste money by changing oil too soon. Also, With low mile cars, the oil does not even get a chance to break down. Instead, the oil is ruined by fuel and water contamination. Low mile cars dont get driven enough or hot enough to evaporate the fuel and water that accumilates in the oil. you have heard the term "all highway miles" that is do to how much a motor is abused buy starts and stops, and not having enough time and heat to allow the vapors in the oil to be burned off by the PCV system. 90% of all engine wear is due to startup wear.. Also low mile cars compared to hi mile cars are possibly worse off than hi mile cars. The world knows 3000 miles as the time to change oil. Freeway cars can go up to 10000 miles without oil breakdown. where as dilluted oil in hot rods may cause problems in as little as 1000 miles. From this you can see that the "high mileage" cars will continue to last longer than low milage hot rods." Therefore the blue book charts are totally wrong in this aspect.
I would rather buy a 150,000 mile 1998 camaro, than a 75,000 mile camaro do to the operating conditions. Im willing to stake my life on it that the 150k miler has less ware than the 75k miler, not counting the interior wear.

When running a healthy does of juice I am more concerned about bearing life and film strewngth than any loss of HP. I like to run oil that works best with the motor clearances to provide the proper oil pressure...and then maybe go up in viscosity a grade. Thats my personal belief. Oil opinions are generally all over the map.

I was using M1 5W30 but I was buring through it like crazy, it thins out way to much. I switched to the M1 0W40 European Formula and it was awesome, the car didn't burn any oil at all. M1 pull the European stuff around here so I went with their regular Super Syn 0W40, it's not as good, my lead numbers went up and others have reported the same. I'm making the switch to Amsoil 5W40 European Formula.

why would you use thinner oil in the summer and heavy one in the winter?

Mobil 1 - 10/30. I usually change oil every 3 months (don't put that many miles on it) because of the nitrous.

Well since I put the new motor together i've been using Pennzoil HD40, and i'm at the point that I can change back to synthetic (was using M1 European 0w40), but don't think i'm going too, cuz that ****'s expensive and I change the oil pretty much every few track trips on the bottle or every couple weeks, think that should keep everything fresh and with the regular being so much cheaper, I can afford too change it more often!
