Default NOS 5177 kit advice

I've read the stickies, and I've searched the forums, but I still feel as though I don't have a satisfactory understanding of the safety issues with nitrous, and the best way to stop burning up my engine.

I have a 1999 Z28 that I bought used, at ~85k miles. It had 2 previous owners: one was a private owner, and the other it was part of a fleet for a business. It has given me no problems, and has run great for the ~4k miles I have had it (I've had the car about a year, or so.) It is my daily driver, and my only mode of transportation (fortunately, my job is rather close, but my college is not). I can't really afford to have the car go out of commission, I don't have the real estate to take apart the engine if something does go wrong, but I'm searching for that little extra bit of 'oomph' to add. My performance mods are in my sig, prettymuch just shorties and an exhaust.

Now, to my point. Normally, I wouldn't consider N2O, since it's not my ideal way to make power. But, here in CA, there's just not much I can do. I found a seller that I can get a NOS 5177 kit at a good price. It has everything included, including a WOT switch, FPSS, arming switch, and a window switch. Now, I don't have a wideband O2 sensor, I have the stock fuel pump, and the stock injectors. I would want to run a 75 shot, but want to be as safe as possible. Is there anyone here who could help me with some suggestions? Should I get a new fuel pump, or perhaps a wideband with a dynotune A/F shutoff switch? Are there any precautions I can take, to prevent some catastrophic failure, such as a solenoid getting stuck open?

This being my one and only mode of transportation, I'm rather paranoid, and would love for anyone to help with suggestions.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this, and even more to those who reply.

Stay smaller 75/100 shot and the 5177 will give ya some love. try to find someone who has hurt their motor running the 5177, likely you won't. It's in the design of the dry hits, and with a ws your set. Go ahead and spray, you'll never look back. just follow the directions. There is an install video in my web under links for the 5177, and another install site, check it out for insight.

Thank you. I don't plan on going higher than 75 (then again, I never planned nitrous either).

Do you know of anyone who has hurt the engine using this kit, personally?

EDIT: It seems as though there are precautions for all sorts of fuel system failures, including the window switch (over-rev protection) and the FPSS. However, is there a way to cut the nitrous supply in case of a stuck open solenoid? That seems to be the only risk I can forsee that hasn't been accounted for by the other safety precautions.

You'll be pretty safe with the dry kits, as long as you use the safety precautions like a window switch, FPSS, and keep the shot under 100. I don't know of anyone who has hurt their motor on a dry hit when using the proper equipment.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm just paranoid about burning up a piston, since we only get 91 octane out here, and it's 120+ in the summer.

Any ideas about an automatic cutoff, in case of a stuck noid? Something like a simple gate, or valve, in the feed line. Have it read the A/F, and automatically close the gate if the engine starts to run lean, or at a set A/F. I haven't seen anything like that, has anyone else?

LOL, I'll bet you spray 75 for about a week at most before you wanna up the shot.

If your worried about a stuck open n2o noid on the 5177 don't be. It is the kit that runs redundant noids, if one fails the other will still shut off flow. It is considered the safety noid. Actually, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has hurt their motor running any dry kit. But, the answer to hurting motor on a 5177, never heard of one.

As much as I *want* to go faster, I just can't do it...yet. It's a really good deal, but I'm instead going to take the money and buy HPTuners, and teach myself to tune.

Perhaps when I have a second vehicle I'll look for a nice little kit for that extra oomph, but now is just the wrong time.

Thanks for all your help, everyone!

I totally agree. And I definetly want to. But, as you said yourself in a different thread: "If you can't pay, don't spray." I just can't pay right now.

That's the smartest thing you could do IMO. If it's your only ride why chance it? Get done with what you need to do right now in life then play later! I on the other hand need to follow my own advice! And as far as a dry or 5177 kit causing a failure, I'll nominate myslef president of that club. I busted my #8 piston up on the 5177 kit at the North vs. South event a few years ago. After the rebuild and some more changes, I split the 5177 into two seperate stages, therefore taking away the "safety" solenoid. This bit me in the a$$ when the solenoid hung open at the track, ultimately burning my car down You gotta pay to play
