Why would it backfire. If it is done right it shouldn't ever be backfiring. BTW I motor purged tons of times right through my LS6 intake.
This is different. If you are spraying in your intake while in a burnout and then your tires hook it will blow the intake apart. I used to do it alot while in the burnout with a button. Gets your tires speed up really quick.

The reason you do is to clean the plugs off before a pass on those big boys that use -10 and -11 plugs. Most of the big nitrous boys do it for that reason. It will chuck and pop if they don't. I have seen a local racer around here hit his 1st stage just to get out of the water box. LOL........He then, after the burnout will hit the first stage by itself and then the second added on top and then the 3rd on top of that. It throws a ball of flame out everytime. Then he busts off a 4.7x in the 1/8 mile. Either way. you don't have to do it in your case. If you are scared your nitrous is not going to work everytime you spray it then you need to make sure eveything is right. I used to do it all the time. I don't anymore because I have a dry kit and it doesn't work like that. I also run NGK 10s in my car as well but James has it leaned out alot to keep the plugs in shape. I leave off of 275 and bring in another 225 in .8 seconds. No bucking or poping.

I spray the kit for 1-2 seconds as it rolls out of the 2nd burnout(actually slowly spinning the tires in vht to coat them). Then I blip it twice when I clear the carb out.
I used to purge into the motor before when I didn't have a purge! I would just do it to make sure all the air was out of the line so it wouldn't pop when I sprayed. Once I got a purge I stopped doing it.
On a street/strip car you really shouldn't need to do this. An open air purge should be just fine because you shouldn't have much nitrous line between the solenoid and the nozzle.
For those that do this, make back to back passes. Bang it before the first and don't before the second. I'll bet that there is no difference in ET or MPH

I had an instructor @ UTI purge into the engine one day when we were doing dyno testing with power adders. I just thought he was messin around but maybe he had another agenda. Noone really commented/asked why we just all smiled.

Let me ask yall a question, what is the point to have a purge on a nitrous kit?? To bleed out any air that may have got in the line, correct?
You do the SAME thing when you purge it into the motor. When you have a 3ft+ long fuel line that might have some air in it, you want to clean it out before every pass.

ps- i have been running my car for over 3 years with nitrous, I purge every time. We went through my motor and the bearing look brand new......
been there and proved that point wrong. Back 2 years ago my car ran 9.81@139 drove right back to the staging lanes, same tire pressure everything. 9.85@139.3. I didn't purge it, nor "bang it" before the pass..

Maybe some of the mindless lemmings will read this and do it too and run faster than they ever have! Then you can be an internet hero!

PS, a purge solenoid mounts right beside your nitrous noid so that will take care of that and I'm assuming you are running a return style fuel system so you actually have no air in the fuel line nor should you ever have since it is a sealed system......If you are running a deadhead style fuel system then you can put bleeds on the fuel side like a lot of the outlaw guys and Pro Mod guys do so that you don't have to hammer your rod bearings so much. But hey, what do I know.

Sorry, I will take advice from someone who builds Pro-Mods, Limited Street, and Outlaw drag radial cars over you. You have proved nothing to me.

I believe Monte Smith tunes as many big dick daddy nitrous cars as anyone and even he said that he never saw any gains from doing it, only damage.

Its called thumbing it. My s10 I had with a 406 in it and a 250 shot we thumbed it all the time after the burnout. You wont blow anything up. Anybody that says it will hurt something is a retard and deserves a kick in the nuts for offering false information. I did it with my camaro ls1 earlier today via the microswitch. As long as you kit is right and you dont bounce the limiter you are ok. Hold it at 3000 or 3500rpms and tap the switch for a second. Its really not necessary with a purge or on smaller kits. It is also a way to test the kits operation. Anywho, my 2 cents, take it for its worth because its worth more than most garbage on here, Josh
Thumbing it, Banging it, whatever you want to call it..... You guys show me some rock solid proof that it helps performance in any way and prove to me that it could not be hard on rod bearings then I'll bow down. Aside from everything else I've listed there is also a chance of a backfire.
I will say that if someone decides that they just have to bang it for some reason the do like CAM72 says, get the RPM's up to at least 3K first, otherwise you'll be picking up parts off the blacktop....

I've always done this method, so has my dad. We never had purges on any of our nitrous cars. We would just hold rpm's around 3000 and mash the pedal and hit the button at the same time and let off. Do it about 2 times and your ready, set, go. No increases in performance, this is just used to get any air out of the system nothing more.
If your car sit rich then it can help clean the plugsd if the nitrous tune is lean. We don't do it with the dry kit the fast don't have provisions for it. I know a bunch of pro mod low 6 econd cars here local have the bang button for each kit. it also a check before each run.
