The problem now is this is the next big publicity platform and the Rep's and Dems are going to look at it that way instead of working together to fix it.

Each party will use it to tout their own beliefs and that the other party can't get the job done. That's what our political system is these days. It got squashed and it has been reported to me that the biggest opponent was the guy from a state with Toyota plants in it... true or not I dont know but the fact remains there will be the majority who try and use it as a politcal stepping stone instead of truely trying to help the people of this country. The republicans are the worst sports when it comes to losing and it wont take long for the crap storm to start flying and nothing getting done as they try and stamp their next presidential campaign on top of this bailout. Thats the sad part of the whole thing. None of those party mongers cares about the issue really as much as how they can benefit the party from it. Dems are just as bad as well.

Fascism gets **** done. Too many people are big media band wagoners, PBS is one of the only sources i can count on for legitimate spin free news.

Ever wonder how much it cost to keep up with what the fed and Califonia keep stuffing down the throat of the Big three?

Let say YOU sold a product. Some of the best around. Now lets say you were told it had to be "X" amout more Efficent AND "Y" amount safer by this time next year or you could no longer sell your product with out HUGE penalty's. Now add to that the fact that there is NO avalable way to do it today or the short future so YOU have to sink huge amounts of your income into just getting ready to produce your product to meet the new standards(that there is no current technoligy for) just so you can sell your product next year.

NOW Imagine this happens to the Big three....every year......
Foreign companies must meet the same standards, so as far as government regulations are concerned, the field is level. Detroit gave Americans the big heavy cars and FUV's America wanted. Now America isn't so keen to buy those huge and hungry vehicles. So, where is the real problem? Is it the road warrior, narcissistic, driving mentality that demands a verhicle that is higher, heavier, and more crash worthy than anyone else? lack of leadership? unions?

The unions might have negotiated contracts that were too generous, but can you blame them? They were only trying to get their piece of the pie -no less than management succeeded in getting their piece (s). The Europeans and most Asian nations’ tax cars by displacement, and their cars sell world wide. But our government would prefer not to do that: It wouldn't be popular keeping Americans from driving school-bus sized vehicles to work.

Very, VERY good article and even better replies above. What mostly ALL media outfits fail to report is the role currencies have. Exchange rates have a huge impact on how the world economy shapes itself.

Write my words: Obama has a big spending plan that is no secret (infrastructure, solar, wind, etc...) He will pay for this by printing money (heck, Ben Shalom Bernanke is printing right now as you read this) devaluating the dollar (inflation). This will make foreing products more expensive to buy, hurting those countries. The Chinese Yuan is pegged to the dollar, so for now they are safe. IT WON'T LAST. The very recent coordinated interest rate cuts on all countries (US, Japan and some European and South American countries) is a temporary attempt to devaluate all those currencies at the same time as to minimize the impact on trade while trying to thaw credit.

- The big 3 will survive and will benefit from a weak dollar.
- BUT... weak dollar = higher oil prices, so we all know the drill.
- Commodities (food) will be more expensive.
- Gold will soar.
- Obama will stay for 8 years and by the 7th we will have double digit interest rates.

Unless some major technological breakthrough happens in energy, that's my one and only prophecy post of 2008 for the next 8 years.

What all this has to do with this thread? IMHO everything. We're talking about a big shift between who produces and who consumes.

What you say is most likely true aout what's to come. But someone has to right this ship that was sent of course by the deregulation that started with Reagan & has been carried on ever since. Sooner or later we gotta pay that bill. Smarter to do it now while we still have an economy.....
