Default My son has learners permit

I thought I would be happy about this having a son share in the joy of driving but I just feel old, seems like yesturday I brought him home from the hosptial. Both my boys learned to drive in parking lots several years ago but being on the road is a whole different story. This morning on the way to church he blew right though a stop sign. Coming to complete stop seems to be the biggest fault.

Mark you've been there done this. Todd & Doug you should be in the same boat or getting ready to inbark on this adventure in parenting.

Give me some advice or share some stories.

Ellis how much to install one of those passenger side brakes?

Teach him to drive on a manual.. I hope he never forgives you if you do otherwise. That's all I can say. I got my permit, my dad and I hopped in the Volvo, took me down to Seattle. "Ok go." Yeah Seattle has a lot of hills, kinda like throwing me into the lake to teach me how to swim LOL. But good luck!

That's bruttal.

Both the boys have driven manuals. Brian my youngest talked me into teaching him to drive a manual in my SS. First attempt did a huge smoking burn out. You should have seen the look on his face; PRICELESS.
We get home and he throws me under the bus with his mom " Dad taught me how to do a burn out"

lol that's funny

Couple Gallons of gas: $5
Few hundred miles of tread off the tires: $40 (estimate lol)
Going home and telling mom that dad taught you how to do a burnout: Priceless!

I forced my 17 yr old daughter to learn to drive a manual transmission before getting into an automatic. Her and my wife thought I was being harsh, but the fact that she is the only one of her friends who can drive a manual is now an enormous source of pride for her. She wants to drive my T/A now ..... ain't happening for awhile

I couldn't imagine driving a fast car when I was a young kid... my first car when I was a teenager was a old busted up Ford Maverick with more rust than paint. Then I graduated to my mom's K-car, and then finally to my very own Honda Civic. My first "fast" car was a turboed Eagle Talon when I was 21.

I still have my first car... a 67 Mustang Coupe restoration project with a 289 2bbl and a C4. I first drove a stick in my friends blown tranny and cv axle hyundai lol to his surprise I got in and took off no problem lol. He still swears I was lying about never driving a stick in my life.

My first car was a 94 Thunderbird LX that I got when I was 18. It wasn't exactly the quickest thing on 4 wheels, but it had a V8 and I had alot of fun with it. My son is only 3, but I've been planning ahead! I think it would be awesome if we could start rebuilding an old Pontiac (I'm a Pontiac guy!) together when he's 14-15, and he could have it as a first car when he turns 16. I wouldn't want it to be super-quick, but that's the kind of car I know I would have been thrilled about at that age! My dad was always rebuilding older cars as I was growing up, but I never had one of my own until the 79 Firebird I rebuilt a few years back...

Heh, I guess I'll be lucky if we're not all driving electric cars in 13 years!

One of my kids will most likely end up with my husbands 67 C-10 but first they have to help put it together.

In about 2yrs my husband is going to ask my son (he will be 12 by then) what type of car he wants & go out & find a V6 & one that needs to be restored. Then restore it with him.

I already know what my daughter wants (shes 6) & she wants 10 Vettes lol Like thats going to happen.

The 1st cars my parents all turned me loose in after getting my drivers license were a

'71 Toyota station wagon with a 4 spd. It took me and a buddy ALL day to get a 2nd gear scratch in this car. My very first scratch It had a 1.1L motor and would go 72 mph WFO. Then came the 2nd vehicle

'76 Toyota Pickup with a 20R motor. It also had a 4 spd. I wound up breaking the shifter off in this one. Had to go to a boneyard, find a shifter, then go find somebody with some tool so we could put it in before my parents found out

I guess that's why I still drive manuals today .... it's what I've always driven ??

For me it was a 1976 Mustang 2 with a stick that I learned on. My dad had a perfect 1965 Impala that we both drove around, when I was 16.

I learned to drive in my mom's brand new 86 Cadillac Eldorado in the snow. Then when I was ready to take the driver's test I asked my friend if I could use his Lamborghini. Alas, I ended up taking the Cadillac.

My mother had a 1970 Trans Am when I had my learners permit.

I took my drivers test in that car.

My first car was a Mazda RX-2 Rotary. Real sleeper car.

What is the driving ages around here.

Back in Kansas, I got my learners permit when I was 14, and you get your full license when you turn 16.

My first car was an 88 mustang (4 cyl, 5 speed) I raced a few buddies in it. Then I got my pickup (raced a buddy in it), which is what I wanted in the first place, then I got a 99 TA (raed it), then the formula. I think the formula is the only one I haven't raced on the streets.....ah...must be getting old

I taught my wife to drive a manual in my TA.
