Aluminum Vs. Iron Block "The real deal"

The LS1 series engine was designed from its inception as an Aluminum block. By starting out with an aluminum block, the designers added many features to ensure long life and strength. Some of these included the ribs on the outside of the block, and the deep skirt and 6 bolt mains. The Aluminum block is very strong!

NOW having said that, when GM started producing the Iron LS1, it was less expensive for GM to use the same casts for the Iron motor and the Aluminum. What does this mean? It means that the same design features that were used to stengthen the aluminum motor are included in the Iron block. Quite simply the Iron block is the STRONGEST small block GM motor Ever produced. I had a great chat with the head of GMPP at SEMA last year. That was just a few things we talked about.

He also hinted at a factory large bore Iron block in the works...

wow Now i have never stumbled across that info now my eyes are opened.

yep i have been learning alot hanging out on ls1
still don't have the ***** to touch my engine. One of these days ellis will tell me to drop dead and do it myself.

Looking more & more like the 402 iron block will get the nod.

Maybe figure things backwards. Start with 7-8# of boost, largest\best cam for the boost to produce the goal you want with rwhp. I am sure you can run 500-600 rwhp and not even have the motor start to feel any pain.

Or why not get the higher compression motor put 4-5# of boost and cam it properly and get some big numbers.

Or put stronger rings\pistons in your ls1 with a proper cam. The rings are the only weak area. That is a 550rwhp easily.

I am sure you have been thinking about all these options.
