Default Got an idea

Some how I got to thinking, and thought of making a gated shifter panel for my car rather than having a boot (kinda like lamboghini's and ferrari's)

Does this sound like a cool idea, or kinda ricey. I could either make it out of aluminum and leave it bare or polished, or powder coat it. Opinions please.

BTW, I haven't really looked into how I'm going to connect it to the console yet...just an idea.

I don't think it's ricey. Actually it's a cool idea. Polished aluminum would be nice.

Give it a shot, measure 3 times and cut once. The angles and spacing will be fairly critical I would think. Isn't the stick supposed to be in a free state when in gear to prevent wear on the synchro's? Or are there even synchros in manuals any more? Hell, the last v8 manual I drove was a 396 chevelle with a rock crusher.

Do you have access to a mill?

"Sounds" cool if you can pull it off...I have always liked those gated Italian looking shifter setups.

I thought about that when I had my old 77 280z. The shifter was so loose on that car that I didn't have to shift up then over, it was just a diagonal movement. Never tried it because I figured it be too hard to get used to.

But it'd look cool!

That would be cool if you could pull it off, but I think it would be pretty hard. The gates on this transmission are pretty close together as it is, I'm not sure how much room you would have between gears?
I like this shifter design:

Transmission moves alot with engine torque. So, unless you have poly motor mounts the motor movement may throw it off. Those Lambo.'s all have floor mounted shifters, with rails or cables going back to the transmission.

Cool idea, hope you can pull it off.

Since B&M makes one for the autos, it can't be all bad, right? Go for it....

A long time ago there was a guy that actually pulled this off. It looked identical to a ferrari set up with the polished shifter and everything. Downside was, it took him FOREVER to get just right and the gate actually slowed his shifting. But god damn did it look good. You might want to pose this question in the appearence section and see if you get any tech feedback on it.

I would be curious how it would work with the different shifters (Factory, Hurst <option for the 6-spds>, B&M Ripper, Pro 5.0, etc) or would u be making a new shifter as well? I know my shifter/handle is in an entirely different position now with the Pro 5.0 then it was with the crappy factory Hurst shifter.......leans much farther over towards the driver now.

Yeah, I figure that each shifter would have a different panel. And also, with the factory shifter, the slots would have to be wider to account for the slop.

well i did a little work today and realized why this isn't being done. Basically with the stick being so thick and a small pattern, there's no room to make any H shapes in there, cause the stick overlaps. Oh well I tried.

Eh, it was a good thought just the same. Thanks for trying.

That was actually the first problem that crossed my mind. Would it work if you used a skinnier shaft on the stick? Those Italian jobbers are rather skinny while our american muscle cars' are thick.

GOD I love those cars AND their shifters........I also see that you would have to make my shifter about 2-3x it's current length to make it work in that type of situation.............something tells me it would NOT be conducive to better times at the track.......but lemme test drive a Ferrari or a Lambo and get back to ya.

you might be able to get it to work if you turned down the stick, but I don't feel like messing up my stick to try it.
