Default I know it's a pain, but...

...if a feller had the patience and correctly prepped everything, would a rattle-can paint job last any amount of time? I also want to make it clear that I'M NOT PLANNING ON DOIN THIS TO MY LS1 CAR, I'm considering the possibility for my beater.

Should hold up for a few years if you clear it as well.

Never tried it though..

Get a cheap paint gun and the cheapest _automotive_ paint you can get your hands on, and it should last a lot longer though.
Shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred in total, and you'll get the benefit of learning something in the process.

i flat blacked my beater, i usually have to throw one coat on per year cuz it fads a little(i got the cheapest crap). this is with no clear coat of course so if you did put a clear on, it would probably last a few years if you prepped the surface correctly. sanding, degreasing, etc....
