Default what can I expect to pay for a decent paint job

I have a car that needs a paint job bad. It is a 98 convertible. It will not need any bodywork, but I was curious on the average cost.

I am not talking about people who got lucky by getting the 250 dollar paint jobs, but actual experience.

The reason I am asking is because I went to three places the other day; All prices ranging from 250(maaco) - 3000(bodyshops)+ .

Also If I spent money on maaco's more expensive paint jobs (1000+) could I expect a decent paint job?

The reason I am asking is because like every business, they want your business so they will tell you how happy you will be with whatever they do.

I just want some honest opinions on a decent price to pay. Obviously the cheap paint jobs mean that cost has to be cut somewhere (generally in materials, prep, and overall detail).

Thank you I appreciate your response.

I plan on putting an ss hood, so they car will be repainted the same color it was. To my understanding, repainting a car the same color is supposed to be cheaper. I also want two stripes, with the type black coloring right below the hood scoop of the ss hood.

Mine is in the shop right now.color change from black to silver. with a black Manta stripe hood and hatch. Small amount of bodywork on the rear quarter and a new pass side front fender.I went look at it Friday and it's about finished it just needs to be put back together. I have a thread on it in this in this section I'll post pics when i get it back.

I would say $2000 is resonable for a quality respray. $5000 for a all panels removed color change.

well I just got mine done about a year ago, and it was 4500 with the flame job. Full panel off and wetsand and buff afterwards. Just be carefull you get what you pay for with bodywork. Here's a pic.

Every shop is different, it all depends on the hours of labor to get the car ready. You COULD do all the sanding, primering, and re sanding to get the body perfect and have them just paint, and clear.

But if you let them do all the work, just make sure you have seen examples of their work in person and ask around.

IF your going to change the color consider removing the engine harness and motor and having the engine bay and door/hatch jams painted so it looks right.

since my car is at my work i been tracking time on it and money spent on material. i have 1000 in paint and clear 250 in pearl 50 in plastic repair material 60 in high build primer and 100 in 2k primer.im at 1460 in material labor rate is 65/hr i have 16hrs in at about 1000dollars and that dosent include paint labor prep disasemblly, reassembally, cut in mask body color mask for roof color and the custom touch masking. so you can see why a paint job is so expensive and im not doing much with engine bay just moving wires and doing strut towers and rad support where i can get to till i get it home and do the motor next year

listen to this guy, he knows what he is talking about. You wont get a good job for 1200. If I was looking for something to be proud of I would expect to pay at least 5000. Anything less and you probably wont be happy with the results. Most of what you are paying for is labor. Block sanding all the waves out of the body takes a lot of time, but really pays off in the final product. Also, the wetsanding after the car is cleared can really make the paint job look amazing. That is only if it is done right. Sure you can scuff it a little bit and buff it and it will look pretty good, but if you block sand the clear in stages and get all the texture and waves out then you will have a nice paint job.
