Floor pan rust; what to do?

So I pulled my interior out to clean everything. Also, to drill holes for my tunnel mount and run the main line. Anyways, I found myself a pretty decent amount of rust. Pics below -

There's a complete hole behind the driver's seat/back seat foot are.


So, what would be the best way to go about repairing this? I was thinking about cutting out the rusted spots and having a buddy weld in some sheet metal. Would that be sufficient? Thickness of metal to weld in?
Or should I just take it to a body shop? Could anyone give me an estimate of what that would run me? Thanks for any help in advance. - S2K

i had a decent amount of rust in my old v6 firebird, it was in the back drivers floor board just like in yours, i took it to a local box frame fence welder, and he cut it out, and welded in a new piece of metal for $15.
it was substantially less rust than yours though, only in one floor board.
not sure about thickness though.
my car was also a 95, but damn that's a lot of rust.
that car must have been on a beach area or something.

Thanks for the reply. Yea, it is a good amount of rust. I think some of the spots aren't all the way through, so I probably grind those spots down and see what it's like and go from there. Unsure of what i'll do with the patch with a hole in it.
The car's windows didn't roll all the way up when I first got it; so I would say some of that is from that, since it set like that for a long time. Also, I noticed the classic parking with the nose facing down on hill leak in the back. And I've got a leak around the passenger side door area. I got some weatherstrip adhesive today, and will be redoing a lot of the weatherstripping on the car. I'm going to move the pass. window back a little as well.

if it was me i would cut out around the rust spots and clean off the rust with a grinder thourghly... get some 20-22gauge steel to weld in where the holes are and get some rubberized undercoating and do several coats all over rust areas underneath the car and inside it. you should be safe for a while after that
the guy i took it too just cut out the whole rear floor pan out of it and welded in another piece cut to fit.
he cut out around the seat belt mounts, and up to the seat bolts from the wiring toward the back.
i had a few minor spots on the other side, but it was like maybe 2-3 inches in diameter, so i just ground it down and put some rust inhibitor paint on it, then sprayed more on the underside of the car.

fuuuuck... good luck man. thats a **** load of rust for a 95...my 67 has never had any rust on the floors... but if u get that fixed at a shop its notr going to be cheap....

Update if anyone was wondering. Never got my lazy *** friends to agree to help me, so I found a guy on a local forum that runs a body shop. Met up with him last wed. Dropped it off this morning. Pretty much is doing what I figured; cut out the bad part with the hole and get a new piece of metal stamped and welded back in. The rest is getting ground down, and we are going to see how bad it is and go from there. I'll get some pics up of the after later this week.

Looks better. Ended up costing me 325 after taxes and everything. Thanks goes out to Butler's Body Shop.

Quick question too if anyone cares lol; In a couple spots it looks like they used some bondo or something, would it be ok to lay down some dynamat on top of it?

well that looks better. However I would have looked under the car more. in the frame rails as ive stated to see what shape they are in before I spent that money fixing that.
I positive that its seam sealer and yes you can put sound deadener over it. I wouldnt do dynamat tho (to expensive) Use fat mat or something else

They did do a bit more than what I knew about. He had sent me a message today (I didn't get to talk to him yesterday), and said they had found some more rust and went ahead and took care of it as well. I will check out the underside some when I change the oil next week. Lets hope for the best lol.
