2000 vette, will i have to repaint?

removed a set of gill inserts from my car only to have a nasty surpise under them. They appear to have been clearcoated over after the install so now I have an unsightly outline of the inserts as well as some minor scratches. So, how do I fix this?

I am hoping they can be buffed out. The pics make it look worse than they are.

very minor. PIctures look much worse than they are. From 10' away you cant see it at all.

You always want to start off with the least abrasive way to remove things like that. My recommendation is to start off trying to polish the scratches away with a less abrasive polish. If your not getting anywhere it might be time for a rubbing compound

, or maybe even wet sending if your not looking to get it re-painted.

Yea I would say polish then use a rubbing compound and then polish again. It may take most of the scratches out or enough that you would say you cant even see it. Just grab a porter cable and go to work.

Thank guys. I used a mild scratch remover from meguiars and it did OK. Its not abrasive at all. car looks better. I waxed it overwards and still can see the outline but not as bad. I will get something a little more abrasive and have another go at it this week. If all else fails, then this weekend I will see about getting it buffed out.

Scratch remover? Anything that removes imperfections like swirls, micro marring, scratches, etc, are abrasive. What you used is probably a less abrasive product, but is still an abrasive.
