Default T-top center bar removal...how?

who's done it? not how you think to do it

Im going to get my center bar off my 99 TA repainted at the shop but only if i can remove it first. I did a search looking for how to remove it but didnt come up with anything.

anyone know how? also whats the black stuff under the bar? will i have to repalce that too? does the bar just come out easily? I looked and I see 3 or so screws on each side.

thanks

hmmmm? i just dont want to bend it up. I need to get it off so i can take it to the paint shop and have it painted along with the CETA mod on rear bumper. I dont feel like attempting to do it....the shop is only going to charge me $30 bucks to do them both but i have to remove them which i dont mind doing.

im new to the Ls1 4th gen world. I come from the 3rd gen.

i'll give the center bar a shot. I'll remove the screws on both sides and see how easy it comes off. im thinking it wont come off real easy cause of the stuff under and maybe on the ends of the piece. The car is pristine and i dont want to screw it up.

It has double sided tape holding it down. I used a wide putty knife and slowly put pressure lifting on it. Just take your time and it'll come right off.

After you get the screws off , I used a heat gun to soften the double sided tape . Doing that it wasnt all that difficult to pull off . Just be patient

yeah good idea.....i dont have a heat gun but ive got a hot blow dryer...LOL

im going to give it a try tomorrow. another question? the tabs on the front and rear of the center bar? what are those? will they break when removing the center section? Ive seen a post about fixing or replacing those but cant find it anymore.

When I took the center bar off the donor car for my T-Top conversion, I just took the screws out and pulled it sideways. It's just some 3M double sided foam tape on the other side. Very sticky, but it'll just pop right off.

The little rubber things on the ends IMO are just for looks really. They tuck up and under the front glass and rear panel. They won't break, they just slide into place. They're not held in by anything. Just take them out when you have it painted and slide them back in when you reinstall.

When you put the center bar back on, I recommend either getting some more 3M double sided foam tape (if you don't plan on taking it back off any time soon) or just put a dab of RTV or silicone sealer around the holes and screw it back down.

yep came right off. I rode around all day with the T's out in the hot sun. Double sided taped stay put on the car. (2 strips)

The little end rubber/plastic tabs came off too but the front side is messed up....

any idea where I can get more of those? I want to replace them with new ones. Would GM have them?

thanks guys for the ideas.

I was unable to find any except for at the dealer. They're only something like $0.75 a piece, but you have to buy them in packs of 10. You might be able to scrounge some up at a scrapyard or something though.

i'll just post up in here...got the part numbers thanks...

question since you know....both tabs seem to be the same when looking at them. why would they have 2 different part numbers for them making you have to buy 20 total? seems kinda stupid.

can i just get 1 packet and use them on both front and back?

Sadly no, they're different. The front one is built to tuck under the window trim lip. The rear one is built to set on top of the sail panel.
