Default Does this need wet-sand/polish or repaint??

I bought the car this way, and it's the only major flaw in the paint on the car.. I really don't understand why/how this happened to just the spoiler, but whatever. I want to know how exactly to fix it. I'm thinking a proper wetsand and polish and maybe even clearcoat could fix it, but then again it might need new paint. What would you guys advise?

That looks like someone started sanding it. If you are worried that it might need a paint job trying to sand it down then polish can't hurt. If the sand paper starts turning orange then you know the clear is crap anyway.

I seriously thought I was looking at some nice brushed wood like on a desk. It looks like a paint job gone wrong. I wouldn't trust it, sand as much of it off as you can before you paint it, if that's what you choose to do.

I'd try wet sanding and polishing it first...it really all depends on how deep the scrates are. Can you catch them with yur fingernail?

Repaint for sure... Looks like the painter thought that the base-coat would fill a heavy grit sand (paper) scratch. Don't waste your time polishing. Sand her down and re-shoot. If they made that mistake, be sure that they made other mistakes as well...

ACtually that looks like it may be able to be polished out. Don't listen to the people who give things no hope and just jump to the conclusion of "repaint".....that's awlays the easy way out. You can always try to wetsand/polish it first. If that doesn't help....get a repaint, which is what you would've done in the first place. What could be worse......you may end up actually saving yourself from a repaint.

Again, don't listen to guys who just own a body shop and don't actually do detailing. I know 30 year painters that dont know jack crap about detailing. The owners of these cars thought they were gonna need a repaint too.....and I saved them a little money. You should at east give it a shot, and don't go to the detail shop on the corner with al the crackheads. Go to someone who really knows how to restore and recondition paint.

looks like the clear coat is cracking, I seen it on alot of gm cars just not this bad. You can probably get it fixed by a good detail shop but chances are it will reappear down the road.

From the photo's it looks like it is cracking. Which a repaint will be the only solution. It won't hurt to try a little wet sand and polishing though if those photo's are deceiving.

totaly different cases!!! your car was just faded and sun beat. his spoiler has sanding scratches under the base coat. there is a big difference between defects under the base coat and defects on the serface of the clear coat. you can't get to those scratches without a repaint.

his scratches appear to be on the top layer to me, you can see how the light catches it.

This happens because of the sun beating down on the plastic and causing chemicals from the plastic to release. I've repainted a good amount of spoilers due to this. Paint reps from BASF that I used to deal with said there is no real way to prevent this other than keeping your car out of the sun as much as possible and that only slows the process down. so yes it will need a repaint.

If you weren't so far away, I would actually like to try and tackle this thing to try and prove people wrong. But who knows....may need repaint, but you'll never know until you try to cut and buff it first.

you can try to buff it if before you get a quote to repaint if that makes you feel better. but i think it's a waste of time. that thing needs to be repainted for a better color match regardless.
