I got my hood painted two weeks ago and the color match was perfect that no blending was needed (people who saw it didn't believe it wasn't blended). The clear had one or two runs so it needed some wetsanding. Yesterday I take it back to my buddy to wetsand/polish/buff and we noticed the color had become a little dull almost a pinkish color. He called his buddy for a second opinion, he tried different compounds and same results. My buddy is going to re-shoot the hood next week but my question is what caused this so it won't happen again?

In that first picture if you look where the fender meets the hood it looks like two different shades of red already

Nope its just the lighting, color was dead on. It just happened after the wetsand and polish.

It looks to me like who ever wet sanded it went through the clear. Either that, or the paint is just bad.

If at all possible, use Dupont next time.

Looks to me like it's not buffed good, but I also don't use ppg so I'm not to sure what could be wrong. Like said above use dupont if possible.

I dont understand how the paint could be the problem it looked great with the clear until the wetsand and polish. And it was painted two weeks ago?
I'm really starting to think the wetsand got passed the clear?
Or maybe some type of contamination with the polishing compound?

If you went through the clear the sanding water and buffing pound would be red, severly doubt went through the clear on the whole hood

Well my buddy is going to re-shoot it. I'm scared that he wants to wetsand after its re-done. I think I can live with some orange peal.

I think you will be fine with a re-wet sanding but make sure he waits at least a month before doing it. After some re-reading and thinking, he may have done this too early after painting.


PLEASE try to get him to use Dupont paint. Good luck.

Well i bought like a quart of the paint so thats what were using. The bottom side of the hood looks beautiful but of course that wasn't wetsanded

You don't have to wait a month for clear to cure before wetsanding. Typical wait times are only a couple days and there's nothing wrong with PPG products either as plenty of daily driven and abused cars run it for years as well as mirror smooth show cars. I don't know what happened but I highly doubt it's brand or wetsanding too early. 2 weeks is not soon.

this. At the shop stuff gets buffed 2 or 3 days after it comes out of paint.

I can't really tell from the pics but i'd say get better compound and rebuff it

The first pic just looks like the compound didn't take out all the wetsanding scratches. I'd hit it again with a better compound as well. And you don't have to wait a month to buff.. In some cases, we've buffed cars on the same or next day with no problems.
