Default Painting rearend with POR15?

I had this posted in Gears and Axles but didnt get too many responses. Anyway I ordered a new Dana 60, and have some questions about prep and paint.

The back of the can of POR15 says "dont use kerosene based degreasers like aerosol engine degreasers because they leave a dry invisible film that may reject POR-15. Does this mean I cant use brake cleaner, Im not sure if its the same thing? I didnt bother getting their prep kit because i was just going to use brake cleaner.

And the previous question sparks another question, because when i placed the order for the POR15 i thought it was just regular paint and didnt know it is supposed to be applied to "rough metal" or rusted metal. So i was just planning on degreasing the rear and painting it, then i did my research after like an idiot lol...Do i need to get the marine clean and metal ready for the POR-15? Has anyone just cleaned some metal with regular degreaser or brake cleaner and painted it? I dont feel like spending another $40 bucks if i dont have to lol, buying the new S60 drained me pretty good. Thanks.

Default s60

The s60 are sweet. The wife has an s40 trying to talk her into getting the new s60.May sound crazy but I use lacquer thinner for everything.Anything that needs to be cleaned.I`d use thinner for cleaning the surface, grab a bunch of rags to make sure you get the film off.The next thing I do is grab a red scuff pad an scuff the rear end then apply paint. If you don`t clean...I mean a good cleaning you`ll get fish eyes due too the grease,an the paint might not stick well.

If it's brand new you may have better luck hitting it with brakeclean and some rustoleum rattle can.

If you use the POR15 the brakeclean will be fine, but scratch the tubes
and brackets up with a red or green scothbrite before painting.

Yes the green scotch brite is rougher than the red which is rougher than the grey. Use the green or red. Body shop supply stores are much cheaper than parts stores.

Yes. Just clean it good after sanding.

Default Etching primer

If I were you i`d buy a couple of can`s of SEM etching primer, prime the rear end before u paint.don`t buy the cheap crap either.I got a 70z28 thats a major project, been outside for a long time an that SEM etching primer is so good it`s unreal.I still have no rust what so ever an it`s been 8-10 years now.

Default Painting rearend

This is what I would use.Give it a good cleaning with thinner,a brand new rear end will come coated is some kinda oil to prevent from rusting. This is what I have used on my other car`s rearend. To get an idea of what to buy.Thinner to clean, use the red scuff pad after thinner has dried.Clean again with a new rag then blow it off.Prime then use grey scuff pad the paint.I purchased a 9 inch rear for my other can welded back brace, spent a good time cleaning then painted an baked it in a booth.Kinda overkill but came out really nice. The primer can is the sites picture, just to give u an idea.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

acetone is the same, it's just more volatile- it evaporates quicker, so you'll end up using more. It'll work just fine. Gopher it.
