well i just got done priming my baby... and all the fiberglass parts came out all wavy and rippely... im not going to redo it and try to fix it now because 1. its not a show car and 2. im out of primer... just curious on how to get fiberglass parts nice and smooth before painting them.

also on a side note... Primer hurts if it goes in your eye fyi.... lol
i opened the can of primer and started stiring it and it was all thick in the bottom so i stirred it the best i could and the plan was to shake it afterwards by hand... so i stirred it and went to put the lid back on, lid sits on top of can and i hit it with my fist, well the was alittle primer in the lip and as i hit the lid it spit what was in the lip everywhere, to include my eye... so word to the wise, wear some eye pro!!!! lol

 

The only way to make the plastic seem less wavy is to block sand that first layer of primer, then reprime. The bigger the block the better. use either 320 or 400 for the blocking, then 600 on the final layer before you basecoat. If you did it right, it will be smooth as glass.

 

It lauded smooth but the fiberglass like the hatch and sail itself are wavy not really the paint... I didn't take my
Time sanding it down and used a da air sander so I think that's the culprit

 

Use body filler first, primer won't straighten fiberglass imperfections.

 

A novice will use a DA sander & without paint it looks pretty good But put some primer on & the flaws show up pretty quick Get a long & medium board with 320 or 400 & sand Then use another primer color preferably high build & repeat if needed Youll get more compliments than the thing wavin at everyone when you roll down the street lol Thats the exact reason im havin the ole ladies dad do my bodywork & paint lol

 

Kitty Hair by Evercoat is what we use at work if we need to repair some fiberglass. If its small waves youve just got to prime, sand, reprime and sand some more. Some primer is made up of some of the most harmful chemicals out there it is a good idea to use face protection when spraying fyi.

lol i wasnt even spraying yet!!! haha had the can on my bench and was putting the lid back on the quart sized can... i pounded my fist on the lid and boom.... there was a little primer left in the lip of the can that got forced out... but yes i do wear a resperator while spraying

 

FYI...put a rag over the can when pounding the lid on. result=no more paint in the eye!

 

Shall call this the rag mod lol
